Anyone ever been on the Nutrisystem diet?

Nurses Stress 101

Published

I was just wondering if anyone on here has tried Nutrisystem. A coworker of mind used to be on it and she lost 17 pounds. I am interested if it gives good results...feel like I should lose some weight (like 20 pounds). Felt kind of "fat" lately..:(:uhoh21:

Just wanted to write an update to this thread. I decided to go for it. I technically started yesterday but today I had each nutrisystem meal. The food is actually pretty good so far....so I'm looking forward to seeing some results. The only downside of course is that it is kind of expensive...but we shall see! Thanks for all your replies. :)

Thanks for the update. Let us know how it is going.

I'm struggling with my weight right now -- and I am pretty sure my thyroid levels are fluctuating and that is the root cause of my problem. I am still eating fairly well and exercising almost every day, but I am gaining back the weight I worked so hard to lose. On the weeks when I gain the weight (for no apparent reason), I have all the symptoms of hypothyroidism. I am exhausted, mentally foggy, and always cold. I think I need an increase in my Synthroid, but my last labs 3 months ago were only "borderline" -- not low enough for my doctor to increase my dose.

It's VERY frustrating. I am eating so little and exercising regularly -- and still gaining 2-3 pounds per month. So far, in the past 6 months (since my thryoid troubles began), I have gained back 14 pounds of the 40 I lost.

Wow llg...even after all that you're still gaining weight! I would definitely talk to your doctor about that. Are you gaining muscle at all? Maybe that could be part of it. I will definitely make updates on this thread. Thanks for your response!

FYI, an Endocrinolgist who specializes in thryroids (know it's rare; but, we had to go to Philadelphia to find him) told my husband that the TSH normal range is so very wide, that those who lie on either end of the normal scale are living with a "sub acute" condition. He also told my husband that he treats by symptoms and not numbers. Sure sounds like you have the symptoms.

My daughter has been urging me to try this diet. Is there a way you can describe or compare the taste of the food? Is it like canned chef-boy-ardee----Yechhh? Or more like ramon noodles?--bearable.

Yep. That's my opinion -- and I am getting increasingly sure of it. I love my PCP -- but I think she is being too conservative on this one. I started having these intermittent problems last summer (just after losing 40 pounds by making a significant lifestyle change.) She (and I) first thought it was just a weight loss plateau, increased muscle mass, etc. But it is definitely more than that.

She tested my thyroid and it came back "borderline." So, she just decided to monitor it. By January, thyroid levels were "significantly low" and she started me on Synthroid. But by then I had gained about 6 pounds back. Plus, I had spent 3 or 4 months being absolutely miserable.

When I first took the Synthroid in January, it was like a miricle. Two hours after taking the first pill, I could feel my body "wake up." I felt so much better -- healthy. Within a few days, I felt 10 years younger -- could focus better at work, etc. By the time my April appointment rolled around, I was starting to feel sluggish again. To me, it seems perfectly reasonable that my thyroid is decreasing over time and that I will need increased doses until it finally "hits bottom." But she said my levels weren't low enough that day to justify a dosage increase.

I am seriously thinking about skipping a dose before my August appointment in the hopes of having a level low enough to justify an increased dose. .... But that sounds like a stupid idea to me. So, I probably won't do that. It's tempting, though. It's just devasting for me to see all my positive results that I worked so hard for to slip away seemingly out of my control.

I'm sorry for temporarily hi-jacking the thread. I really am interested in reading how the Nutrisystem thing works for you, DolphinRN84. Keep us posted! ... and good luck!

Wouldn't pre made meals, like Lean Cuisines, accomplish the same thing for alot less money? You are getting the same thing, premade, light meals to help you diet, and you are adding veggies, fruits, and dairy products to round out your meals.

Yeah I guess you're right...I had thought about it before but hadn't really crossed my mind. Well..thought I'd give this one a try at least and see how it goes. Thanks for the post though. :)

The bars that I got are absolutely delicious. Last night I had the meatloaf entree and it was really good...it kind of tastes like just the frozen dinner entrees you would get at the store- except less calories and I guess healthier. Though I didn't care much for the mashed potatoes..I had to mix it with the meatloaf and sauce and it tasted much better. I just started a couple of days ago and so far its good. I haven't had everything yet but hopefully they are good. For now, think of it as just eating another frozen dinner- except portion controlled. Before I started NS, I didn't have high expectations because of course I wasn't expecting anything gourmet. I think that helped in terms of the taste of food since I'm not that picky of an eater. If you can afford it..give it a try! Hope this somewhat helped.

Weight Watchers is probably the best weight reduction program out there because of their point system. You eat within your points and you will lose weight. Check it out.

I think it's a matter of personal taste and style. The whole Weight Watchers thing seems too much of a "religion" to me -- a little too "gung ho" and all that.

But I am certainly happy you found something that suits you well.

It's just not for me.

Hey, thanks. It does sound bearable. I think I will try a 2 week supply at first. Should be able to know if it will work in that time frame. Have any suggestions of what to order? The meatloaf sounds OK. I will only do the custom menu because some of the choices don't sound too good.

The most appealing thing about this system is that I do not have to do counts or my own cooking. Cooking is what gets me in trouble because I am very particular when I do the cooking. If I am going to do portion control, I really don't want the food to taste good enough that I want to stuff myself; and, I don't want to have to put the all the effort into shopping and cooking, just to take spend only a few minutes eating. For me, the objective would be to stay away from the thought of and sights/smells as much as possible. I see that prepackaged foods could acheive that objective.

Thanks again
