Hello and help! I was wondering how many of you are in the same boat or a similar boat as I am:
I currently have my BA in a major that is not nursing, 3 years out, tried the whole trying-to-get-a-teaching credential thing which was dumb because there are soooo many in California that can't find a teaching job... but realized through an odd way of life events that nursing is what I love and must do.
HOWEVER... I cannot decide what I should get: my ADN and then take an RN to BSN bridge program or go for my accelerated BSN? Money will be a factor no matter what, loans will be an issue because I already have a BA... the things I am worried about and have been wracking my brain (and I am sure all within ear shot of me) are what to do about the Spring 2013 budget cuts that will affect the whole timeline I have been trying to put together and that will surely affect admission rates for Fall 2013.
If California is one of the states that has been starting to require that all nurses have a BSN- how can I get into a program with all of the budget cuts? Am I better off moving to another state and paying out-of-state tution? I bet I will finish everything faster. Or am I better off going the community college route and paying less and maybe not being able to land a job in California?
With where I am in my pre-reqs, I should be able to finish everything this Fall (2012), which allows me to apply for Fall 2013 programs.
I know that there are loop-holes for every situation and person but I have to remember that those are the expections... not the rule. I want to play it safe but I am terrified of not being able to make a sound decision due to the mess what this whole economic recession has brought.
I, fortunately, do not have to worry about moving a family where ever I decide to go or whatever I decide to do. I am up for anything and everything.
Someone, please advise!
Gah... I need a nice, relaxing bubble bath!

Well i believe the CSU cuts will affect everyone trying to apply to those programs.. i think the competition will even be stiffer in Cal States and UC's.. is your GPA Flawless? CSU's/Cal States are already near impossible to get into (for nursing anyways). Have you looked at private programs? National University and Mt. St. Marys all have an Acc BSN programs.
Yes an ADN is cheaper but right now the way things are BSN's are the ones that are getting priority in the job market (at least thats what i observed)
Id say go for the BSN!
im almost done with all my pre-reqs as well and im going to be applying at a few private programs as my GPA isnt anywhere near good enough for Cal States/UC's. From what i observed if you dont have AT LEAST a 3.8 GPA for cal states/Uc's your pretty much out of luck (there are occasional exceptions im sure)
Ive also been looking out of state and i hear UNLV isnt as crazy to get into as schools in CA. they also have a Acc BSN as well i believe and their programs start 3 times a year so you should be able to apply to the Summer start.
all of these schools have a financial department that should be able to figure out your money situation so i would deff talk to them as well.
No, my GPA is not flawless... my UG is a 3.4 and so far my pre-reqs are a 4.0 but I am not holding my breath. I usually am a B average student anyways (nothing wrong with it but definitely not the easiest!)
I am basing my decisions about Mt. St. Mary's and National based on this: Board of Registered Nursing - NCLEX Pass Rates
I did not know UNLV had an Acc BSN. Are you considering it? And thanks for the advise about talking to the financial departments... I didn't think about that!
Are you worried about financial means?
well 4.0 GPA for pre-reqs is awesome! so you might have a shot at cal states..
Well i had a tour of Mt. St marys and it seems like really good school. Campus is AMAZING!!!!!
i wouldnt completely base all of your decision on the Nclex pass rates as part of it has to do with individual effort.
actually im looking at the UNLV website and i cant seem to find anything about a ACC BSN program, but i know that their standard BSN program is 16 months (which is pretty fast).
I dont have any degree yet so im going to be looking as a pre-nursing student with no degree.
my advice is to apply everywhere and those that accept you, you can make a choice between them
since im going to be going in as an undergrad, i dont have any loans currently so im going to be applying for every federal aid and loan and scholarship out there.

just apply to every school you're interested in and then base your decision on which ones you get accepted in if you get accepted in a BSN take it!! it will better for you in the long run yes its more than an ADN at a community college but trust and believe you will not regret it.
