to start searching for a job? I thought I might be more relaxed and able to study if I were to only focus on the NCLEX. Now I am afraid there might be fewer positions available at my facility of choice. Hmmm...

I graduate in May 2008, but I'm going to start job hunting over the Christmas break, around December & January. I want to have a job when I graduate, and I'm afraid of not getting a spot in a class to train in an ICU. That's why I want to do it early. I'll worry about the NCLEX when I'm working. Then, after passing the NCELX, it'll be time to start studying for the GRE. I think you should do whatever feels comfortable for you.

I passed the boards almost a year ago this week. I studied for the boards and then I interviewed. I put out my feelers starting in January though. I don't think it matters and don't believe all they hype.

Most facilities here in St. Louis do hiring in the Fall, Winter and Spring as well as orientations and such for new grads. So here if I waited until I passed boards, being as I graduated in May, I wouldn't get into a job until Oct. I think there will always be a position available WHEREVER you want to work...
I have a few friends who want to wait until they pass boards, not really sure why, but they are.

I started applying for jobs before I even graduated from nursing school. I applied in early April and had a job locked down before finals week. I have to wait a month for orientation (June 25-29) and by that time I will have already taken state boards (June 14).
My MIL (who works in the HR department) said that I managed to snag an early orientation and others who applied after me are waiting a couple of months just for orientation.

Many hospital will pay for NCLEX reviews if you get a job with them before you take your boards. This was why I decided to apply for a job before I took boards.

I am also waiting till I pass the boards. I already have a job with an excellent salary. More than a new grad, but I wanted to be an OR nurse. So I will probably be taking a pay cut to become a nurse. So I can't take an RNA job until I get my license. I believe I am one of the acceptions to the new grad rule. Hopefully when I pass the boards I can transfer to a federal hospital and keep my salary.

I started putting in applications at the end of april, graduated in May, and I am taking boards tomorrow. I didnt start interviewing for jobs until the first of June. Hopefully I will have the position of my choice locked down this week. I did find that many positions were already filled with new grads or there were not enough preceptors to train anymore new grads in that position, but there are many hospitals in the area...

Yep!! Hard to move, get organized, figure life out and study for boards all at once. I expect to receive my ATT any day now. then I will allow myself one month to study and do nothing else as it's been so chaotic!! Keeping my fingers crossed. Until then, I try for at least 50 Kaplan questions per night. I figure I will expired from their site by the time I sit for my boards!!

I applied for two jobs while still in school and then I was offered and accepted a job but it doesn't start til September and I plan on taking my boards in August so that gives me time to just study!
