I do agree, it is a little out of hand. I think it's really quite comical how we run around and do all these little things to make the place presentable for JCAHO. Then everything falls back to the way it was.
When I was in school, we would always have the week off from clinicals if JCAHO was inspecting our clinical site. I guess it would be overly frazzling to have students running around, messing up the place and potentially saying or doing something the JCAHO people wouldn't like.
Certainly JCAHO knows we all do the "get everything prepped for JCAHO, then watch it all fall back to the way it was" thing!
OUR therapy dogs do have to go through competencies, there is a policy listing all the medical tests and behavioural requirements. They have to obey certain commands, and not jump up on the bed even when invited by the patient etc. I read them and thought not one of the pets I have ever had would pass, and I have had some pretty loveable babies.
And yes it was JCAHO who prompted the policy (either that or our OCD infection control nurse.)
Actually, I know they have to go through special training and are certified or whatever--
Have you considered slipping your "OCD" ICN some anti compulsive drugs in her coffee? I did Infection Control for 7 years, it can get fairly anal @ times. May be why I left?
JACHO left a week ago and we're still recovering; we got a 95 and NO type 1 citations. All staff members are getting a $600 bonus!!
Yes, really. If I'd known ahead of time, I might have enjoyed it more!!

I love your reply! What I want to know is, where are you? Our last survey was 100% and we all got NOTHING. The admin staff all took the next 2 days off and got 'payoffs'. I can almost bet that the next one is not as good!!
I'm in SanDiego, CA.
This bonus showed up just in time for Christmas, only 6weeks after we found out about it--world record time for our "system"!
It's now almost 2 months post JCAHO, and all of a sudden the admin is starting to whine about the budget. They are saying it's because of the energy thing, but I think it's because they spent so much fixing the place and the paperwork up and paying overtime to do it!
I still hate JACHO.

I have just spent time writing a "Competency" for our Cuddlers. These are the grandmothers and fathers who are kind enough to come to the NICU and spend 3-4 hours holding and comforting babies, esp. those who have no visitors, are withdrawing, are fussy for any reason. They are supervised by RNs at all times.
I'm sure others can cite chapter and verse of stuff being done solely for Joint Commission, and stuff they must be able to recite like some show and tell, etc. It really frosts my cookies when time is taken away from pt care and spent on this stuff.
I'm venting, I know, but really--some of this ridiculous??
