Today was my first "official" day of nursing school and I have to admit to being more than a little scared. The lecture went great with going over the syllabus and all. Then we were told about deadlines and clinicals. Then they let us know that they go by a 7-point scale. Scoring below an 85% on an exam will get you counseling! Does every school do this? Do they go by a 10-point scale for everything but nursing? Just wondering

What semester are you in? I am in 2nd semester now and I haven't heard of this before. Isn't the pass rate minimum 77%?

My school is a 76%. Ive heard of schools with anything below an 80% considered failing but 85% sounds alittle rediculous! Nursing doesnt go by a 10 point grading scale, not by any schools that I have seen.

Our school is the same way. To top it off, I'm in an accelerated program so I get 8 weeks instead of 16 to learn the material. I realized pretty early on it was either die from the stress of trying to maintain my straight A average or keep my mental/physical health throughout this program and be happy with the Bs. Life is much more pleasant now.

My school is on a 7 point grading scale....IT"S SO HARD!!!!! an 80% is the lowest we can score. Knowing that my nursing school has the highest passing rate in the state of Louisiana..

My school has 85% to keep going on to the RN bridge. An A is 92%!
The minimum is 79% to get the LPN. EVERY semester you must have a 79% to even go on to the next unit.
Since you say you just started, I hope you don't mind if I give you a few pointers that helped me... I am sure there are many others too that have great ideas!!
A few things that have helped me..
1. keep my grades to myself--don't go around comparing, it could get you down hearing everyone's woes. ( and save you snide comments if you have better grades than them!)
2. Every week work on the NCLEX questions in a practice book, it helps tremendously when taking tests.
3. I have a full house at home... so I took an hour or so after class ended to sit and do some studying before I went to be "mom". I considered that just part of my classroom time!
4. I found that doing some relaxing breathing before a test helped me to remember better. I did this rather than listen to the reveiwers before the test who had answers that would mess with my mind and make me doubt myself :-)
5. If you don't understand, go ask the teacher AFTER the class has ended. She/he is much more likely to expound because the lecture is not interrupted.
6. Look at what is different about something in a group...( ex: NG tubes.. what makes them set apart? Sengstaken vs single lumen) this will help you remember long lists easier.
Good luck to you!!! And remember...Take time for yourself!

Wow.
My school's passing cutoff is a 75% which seems perfectly fair to me. That's always been within C range in my experience (middle school, high school and college).

We have a 7 point grading scale at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. The lowest score we can get is a 78% and we have a 100% first time pass rate for the NCLEXRN the past few years except one semester when it was 98% because one student passed on the second try and 94% of those who are accepted graduate. It seems to do a good job weeding out the people who aren't able to grasp the material. But it also makes it more stressful for those who can, especially if you're trying to maintain a scholarship.

Some do, the BSN program here does.they are on the standard 10 point
But the program I am in does 77%-84%, 85%-93%, 94%-100% for A,B and C
