anyone else changing careers to go into nursing?

Published

Hi everyone!

Is anyone else here totally changing careers to go to nursing school? I guess I'm looking for a little encouragement that it's OK for me to want to get out of the corporate/business world that I HATE and go into nursing!

What are your thoughts and reasons? Here's a little about me -- I have a degree in Advertising and I've been in the business world for almost 5 years now. I just have no interest in business-related things, and I have no desire to climb the proverbial corporate ladder. To me, nursing seems like something totally different from that. I can't say I've had a passion for it my whole life, like some people can. It only just occurred to me about 6 months ago. But I just want something different -- I HATE sitting at a computer and being bored out of my mind for 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week!!

Anyone else in a similar situation?

This website has helped me a good deal as well, but beware of the negative comments.. there are many.

I am leaving web technology for a career in nursing.

Certainly, my field is no longer for me. Since the economic downturn, I'm watching my earnings potential wither away monthly. I'm so tired of investing in new skills only to watch them become obsolete in 1.5 years. At 38, I don't want the BIG paycheck or promotion anymore. I want just a little stability, flexibility, some facetime, and the satisfaction that I had a modicum of impact for someone. Think about this: every program, document, database that I've created in the last 13 years is obsolete and forgotton! My creations have the shelflife of a gnat in a rainstorm. No one would show up to my funeral eulogizing "He wrote some great sales literature back in the '98, really moved me deep down, had to come pay my respects".

I have thought about it for about 2 years and now with the possibility of a lay-off, am really using this as an opportunity to make a total career change. I find some of the posts here sad and discouraging, however I can tell you that there isn't a single career path in 2003 where people are exceptionally happy (one of my friends is a therapist -- career dissatifaction is the number one complaint these days). Despite a lot of messages on these boards that discourage the profession, I'm going into it with enthusiasm. Why? can't explain it totally. Maybe it's part of post- 9/11, but I want my primary activity while I'm on this earth to have the possibility of positively impacting other lives. I am willing to take on the less fun parts of nursing to do just that. As the old political maxim says "You can't change the world if you can't pay the rent". Nursing provides an income and an opportunity to care for others and a foundation to do much more.

I also looking forward to getting into an established profession where at least some members are interested in political reform (IT hasn't yet developed a politcal culture). I hope to run as a independent candidate one day. I see Nursing experience can only help.

Thx!

Very well said Mr D! I can relate on the funeral thing too, I work for a company so large, the customers have no idea I am the one keying in the money into their accounts. All they care about is the money is there. I want to do something to where people will know I impacted lives as well. I really think I would enjoy working with kids or babies.

I'm happy to see you mr D. Come join the guys club :)

am planning to pursue a career in nursing and most people advise me to get the LVN program first because I am working full time, M-F. Would anyone know nursing schools in LA, CA which offers LVN courses on weekends? Like most of you, I don't find fullfillment anymore in working in front of the computer 8 hrs a day 5days a week.

Hi dean, I looked up CA LVN Schools on internet and found it. They list them. I was looking into that too, until I figured it would take almost as long to get that as an RN, and it pays pretty poorly, considering all the hard work. Look on the LVN Boards here, they gave me great advice.

Good luck! Heather

I'm crossing over from being a licensed cosmetologist. ( How-ever i do plan to keep up on my con-ed & licensure.. just in case.) Also, i've been a stay at home mom for 8 yrs, so it will be a big change in my life. I'm a little scared, but excited and ready to work again.

Well Tanz, at least the in-bed hair washing will be a breeze for you!

I'm switching careers too. I have a BS in Computer Graphics. I got tired of dealing with the pratically non-existent job market so I now work for a large corporation doing tech support--YUK! Not only do I hate the business environment, but I'm also sick of computers. I use to love them, but I barely use my PC at home now because I'm so sick of them. I know that every job is going to have something that we may dislike, but I feel like no matter what nursing throws my way, it will be rewarding and it is a career that means something. I just don't feel useful in the world when I'm sitting behind a computer. I'm getting ready to take A &P this fall and I can't wait. I know its going to be tough, but I've already purchased some flashcards and starting reading as much as possible to get a head start. I'll start applying to Nursing programs in December! Can't wait to get away from the business world and wear some scrubs! :D

Welcome Pru! I have a brother in law that lives in Maryland. Are you starting to see the colors change yet? Heather

Not yet, but I can't wait....it is really pretty here in the fall. It's actually still really humid.

Hi Amy,

I'm a single mom of three. After divorcing, I went back to teaching special education. It's a jungle out there! I do like being in a helping field, but teaching school is not what it used to be prior to when I was a "stay at home mom" . I was beginning to take a couple of prerequisites so that I could get my ADN/RN since I already have my bachelors. I felt guilty going back to school because my son was only 2 weeks old so I quit. Now he's 9 and I'm currently taking an online Statistics class which is required for a BSN/RN. It's a bear and I'm wondering if I should just get a ADN instead so I don't have to take that and chemistry!! I can deal with Microbiology and anat & phys. but the other two!!

Good luck!

Janie
