Anyone here from Boston MA?

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Hi Everyone,

I am relocating to Boston MA and wanted to see if anyone from there is around on this board as I have a TONNE of nursing school questions!

Thanks

Thanks Silverdragon and Hi PennyS!

I'm still in the prenursing stage so wanted to ask if you had any advise on where to take the pre reqs relatively inexpensively? I'm returning to the real world after taking time off to have a baby and stay home with him for a bit and am a bit horrified at how much the classes cost in private uni/s!

Unfortunately as we just moved to Boston, I don't qualify for instate tuition at Bunker Hill etc and they seem to insist on a bio with lab pre rep to A and P-

As you can see I'm generally a mess! So any advice you have for someone just starting out in nursing, I would be so grateful!

Community college is definitely the most inexpensive route to take. I completed all my prereqs at Quincy College. I was also running into the problem with "my prereqs having prereqs". QC was the only CC where I did not have to do that. I am unsure what the tuition would be for a non-state resident. How long have you lived here? It might be worth waiting to begin classes, from a financial standpoint, until you establish residency in the state. You also could explore some online options. I know my niece took a class online at Rochester School of Nursing and I have seen Weber University mentioned often.

Just want to add that I don't think Quincy College has different tuition/fee for out-of-state students, so all students are charged at the same rate. Harvard Extension is also relatively inexpensive, although still more pricey than community colleges.

Thank you so much! I just looked at Quincy and it seems really reasonable compared to anything else I've seen...you're right umbdude, they don't seem to specify in state tuition etc...

I'm having a hard time figuring out when they offer A and P though...I was hoping to take them both over the coming summer but don't see the summer schedule anywhere...probably too soon...

Are you both currently working in Boston?

I'm starting nursing at QC in Spring and had worked in Boston all my life in a different field. The summer session 1 schedule probably won't come out 'til late March or April, but A&P is definitely offered in the summer. I took A&P I and Growth & Development over the past summer.

Yes, the summer schedule is not usually posted until March-April. I am working in Boston but not in the healthcare field. Hoping to start an Accel-BSN programs this summer. Just sent in an application to MGH. Also applying to Simmons, UMB, and Curry.

Ok I just posted an insanely long comment but then lost power....

Let me try this again...

UmbDude- congrats on getting into a nursing school! How exciting that you will be starting soon. I was wondering if you could let me know how much the texts, lab kits etc cost for A and P? Is there anyway I can get a used book and save some $$? Also, did you find it managable to do both A and P AND G and development?

Penny S- congrats on getting your apps in! MGH is SUCHHHHHH a great program! If I wasn't so set on getting into a direct entry CNM, I think that would be my top choice for sure. Seems like the connections you would make on the job would be so valuable and if you manage to secure a jog at MGH on graduating...how awesome...

Is it true that the UMB deadline is summer? And that you need to have all your pre reqs done before you apply?

The UMass Boston Accel deadline this year is Feb. 1st and you do have to have all your prereqs completed prior to applying. Starting with the 2014 class, the deadline is changing to Nov. 1st and they will also be requiring the TEAS exam.
