questions answers
in the event that i am not accepted to the oakland campus, what are my chances of getting into my 2nd choice (san mateo)? i'm wondering if i should change my first choice to san mateo now if that will increase my chances of getting accepted. at this point it is too late to change your first choice campus. if you are not admitted to your first choice then you are automatically considered for your second choice. another question: what if i do get accepted to oakland, and i wish to change to san mateo - will i be able to if there are openings? only before the program begins are you allows to switch campuses if there is room. fyi...typically this is not available for the oakland campus as that is our most popular campus. i have already requested official transcripts for fall 2008 (which will be available to me on 1/5/08.) should i send these transcripts to your attention to be added to my application? please only send official transcripts for school you are not planning on taking additional courses from. they can be mailed to the office of admission 370 hawthorne ave oakland ca 94609 do i have time to retake my net again for this particular selection? if you scored below a 70 on any section of the net i would recommend retaking the exam as soon as possible as the files go to the faculty in early january for their review. would the acceptance letters be sent out at the end of february even for the april 2009 term? yes all of the letters are sent out at the same time. i just wanted to check in on my application and make sure you had everything that's needed. when your application is reviewed if there are any materials missing you will be contacted via email. please be sure to periodically check you junk mail folder for any smc emails. first, i need to get my cpr certification renewed. do i have to get a special health care provider cpr certification? you need to have cpr certification at the health care provider or professional rescuer level prior to the start of classes. it has to be through the american heart association. for more information regarding this certification please contact the american heart association. also, when should i plan on meeting with samuel merritt's financial aid advisors? you should contact the financial aid office regarding these type of questions they can be reached at 510-869-1550 or [email protected] while this does not seem like a deal killer i wanted to check with you regarding the possibility taking nutrition concurrent with absn for the first few weeks of the class should i be accepted by samuel merritt and be in a cohort that has started already. this is a deal killer!!! you can not take courses concurrently with the program. you must bring proof of completion of your course to orientation which is typically a week or two before classes begin. about how long should be expect to hear about the interview, or around what time do they have the interviews? also, there are a lot of colleges that have adapted the lottery system in terms of acceptance to the school, has samuel merritt adapt that system also? there are no interviews for this program. nor do we use a lottery system to choose our students. i was wondering if you know how many people applied this term and how many are you accepting? there are 300 applicant and 144 seats available. how many students will be accepted to the absn program in oakland? there are 48 seats available at each campus. when is the start date for the program? san francisco begins in late april, oakland begins in late may and san mateo begins in early june.
dear applicant,
thank you for submitting your application to the absn program at samuel merritt college . this email is to confirm that your application has been received. we are in the process of reviewing the applications for the summer 2009 term. if there is anything missing, any announcements or if any questions arise you will be contacted via email, so please check your email regularly. once the initial review is completed the applications are sent to the faculty for the second review. we anticipate sending out acceptance letters at the end of february.
through out the process i'm sure many questions will arise. please feel free to email them to me and i will collect them and answer them in the faq's emails i send out periodically so that everyone can be on the same page.

anybody applying for FAFSA? If you are, do you know which school year you apply for Samuel Merritt ABSN? (1) 2009-2010 school year(July 1st 2009 - June 30th 2010 OR 2) 2008-2009 school year (July 1st 2008- June 30th 2009). The timing is a little off so I'm a little stuck on which school year to apply it on.
I did both FAFSA's (2008-2009 and 2009-2010.) I emailed the financial aid department with your exact question a couple weeks ago and they replied: "You need to do the 2009-2010 FAFSA. Once you do that, and we get confirmation of your acceptance we will then proceed with the Financial Aid process."
I still thought that was a little ambiguous, so I figured I'd cover my bases and do both. But it sounds like you can probably just do the 2009-2010 one.
Good luck!
And by the way, people better post here when they start getting acceptance letters! End of February is coming right up!
Last year SMC summer ABSN applicants were getting notification as early as Feb 07. There are more applications for evaluation this year, but I'm hoping to hear from them before mid Feb. Our roadmap to RN:
SMC acceptance ---> Money for tuition ---> Surviving theory + clinicals ---> Passing NCLEX ---> Getting hired ---> Being capable to handle the job ---> living happily ever after!
Good luck to you all!
How does everyone that applied to Samuel Merritt for this summer feel about the current new grad job climate.. I have applied to Samuel Merritt among other schools.Would love to go there but everything that I have read .. and I called John Muir last week. .. it just seems impossible to get jobs in the bay area.. If Samuel Merrit was 5,000 instead of 50,000 then you could possibly say ok for now I will go anywhere to get a starting job, even where pay is half here and then come back but with a huge debt hanging over our heads it seems that we would need the bay area wages to pay the loans!!! Just wondering if anyone has any ideas regarding this..I got accepted down south where you pretty much can get a Kaiser scholarship and then you have a job.. of course the pay is 10 dollars an hour less and I am frightened that the hospital will pull out with the current economy-- you don't interview for the scholarship until the 2nd semester...
Any ideas, strategies will be appreciated....
Back when I started doing prerequisites for Samuel Merritt in 2006, the job market in the Bay Area didn't seem so scary. Or maybe I just wasn't paying as much attention, and was blinded by all the NURSING SHORTAGE headlines, and a 12 month program close to home was too enticing. Anyway, now it's 3 years later and I'm so sick of working minimum wage, I'd rather have a solid career anywhere even if it comes with a mountain of debt. If I had it to do over, I would have spread my eggs around in more baskets. Less expensive baskets. But at this point advancing my career in Kansas (or wherever this mythical shortage is) for 5 years to pay off my loans doesn't sound that bad. I'll get some cheap rent and have good credit when I'm done. On the other hand, I'm only 24 and don't have anything tying me to the Bay Area. I can imagine if I were more mature and patient or had a partner/kids I would be holding out for a cheaper school. Sorry- I guess I didn't offer any advice, but that's my take on the Samuel Merritt school/job situation.
thanks it is good to hear peoples ideas. you make some good points.. Yes I have no one tying me down but am older and just left many years in one spot where I could have retired so I need to be "catching up" and have as little debt as possible.. Yes I just kept hearing shortages.. but I guess better now that we are aware.. At your age you are right .. you will get paid off in plenty of time. I wish you the best!!!
Hello everyone!
I just found this thread. I posted an original thread, but haven't received much feedback. Anyways, does anyone know of an alumni from SMC who attended the ELSMN-FNP program in Sacramento? I'm currently taking Comm St. 3 right now and studying for the NET. Hoping to take it in March or Aprial. I'm applying the ELMSN-FNP program in July. And also, the ABSN program in Jan. as a back up. Anyone else looking to apply to SMC (Sacramento)??? If so, maybe we can keep in touch on here! Good luck!
