Is anyone else applying to ABSN at Merritt for Spring 2009. Let's post our experience the next 6 months here. I'm just getting started on my application due nov 1. Good luck.
I just did a job search for CNAs and it doesnt seem like the job outlook is that bad.... From reading the CNA threads on here though I hear that you can get fired pretty easily when you're just starting, but it isn't too hard to find another job. There are even a couple job openings at the hospital right next to SMU's Oakland campus and there are quite a few openings at the hospital down the street from me... Some said they needed 6 mo experience, others just said to be certified. I just hope that there arent a whole bunch of experienced CNA's job hunting too! HAHA. Mann.... everyone wants experience but experience is so hard to get. I'm trying to volunteer at the hospital near my house but they have a whole wave of interns coming in this coming month so they don't have any time to train volunteers.
have you looked into John Muir for volunteering.. I have been there for 5 years
I'm not sure about the Kaiser Scholorship, but I'm sure if you call SMU's financial aid office, they can tell you.I'm in need of a huge loan now. I will make an appoingment with SMU's financial aid department, but has anyone else already gotten a loan? If so, What loan did you get? Unfortunatly I didn't qualify for anything with the FAFSA
Iwant2beRN: Just curious, did you already get an award packet from SMU stating that you don't qualify for any federal loans? SMU sent me a letter notifying me that they didn't receive my FAFSA/Student Aid Report which I filed almost two months ago. So I called the financial aid office to verify and it turns out I shouldn't have received that letter. I also asked when we should be receiving our award letters and the girl said usually 1 month before classes start. How are we to consider federal loans before private loans when they notify us soooo late?!?!
california department of education has a list of dhs-approved schools that offer cna program:

I know that you can go on the website and start looking.. simpletuition is a good site.. I think I better start playing the lottery:D
Does anyone know if the Kaiser scholarships are going to be offered this year?
I was also wondering about the Kaiser scholarship. How does that work/what do we need to do for that? I know you have to agree to be employed with them for 2 years but what is the process for getting their scholarship? Anyone know?

I just spoke to someone at the Financial Aid Office because I received a letter saying that they haven't received my SAR from FAFSA and the lady told me that they sent out those letters just as a reminder to fill out a FAFSA. She checked my records and told me that she did see mine on file so to not worry. She also said that I should expect the award letter sometime in MAY. Yup, that's one month before the program begins! Yikes!
gdmartinez0903: We are going to be in the SF cohort together!! I was hoping we could exchange information so that if either of us has a question we can contact each other.
Financial Aid -
I met with Lily Marquez on Monday and it looks like I qualify for the full 18,750 in Stafford (gov't) loans. However, I need to secure about 55,000 in PRIVATE loans for the rest of the expenses. CRAP that's a lot of money!!
I think I'm going to start the process of finding a private loan tomorrow. My credit score is less than perfect, therefore my interest rates will probably be higher than I'd like.
Kaiser Scholarship -
I asked Lily about the Kaiser loan forgiveness and basically they award 5 scholarships to each cohort. The "catch" is, you are not guaranteed a job with Kaiser. They give you the money up front, then you have to compete with all the other new grads for a job. If you do not get a job with them the scholarship becomes a loan with 10% interest! I suggest thinking it over a bit. :rolleyes:There are other employers who will forgive a certain amount of your student loans ONCE you've secured a job with them.
Good luck to those of you who are re-classifying for Fall or taking CNA classes.
Thanks all for the information on CNA classes. :redpinkhe Weekend classes sound appealing, as I'm currently working.
Lil Gumble, I'm not even on the wait list because my application was "incomplete" due to me being one unit short of microbiology. Grrrrrrrr. :angryfire I wish I had known sooner. C'est la vie. I'll reapply once I get that silly little unit finished, and hopefully they will let me apply for Fall. I think you have a good chance, even at #29. Good luck!!!
