Is anyone else applying to ABSN at Merritt for Spring 2009. Let's post our experience the next 6 months here. I'm just getting started on my application due nov 1. Good luck.
UND has some online classes that start whenever you want them to, but it's really expensive.I emailed Lizzie in January to check on my application and found out my file was incomplete eventhough an admissions counselor had approved all my prereqs. I ended up having to retake a class, and UND was the only school I could find with classes that hadn't already started. I enrolled in the class and then was accepted to the San Mateo Campus. Good Luck, I hope you can work something out!
I'm not sure about the Kaiser Scholorship, but I'm sure if you call SMU's financial aid office, they can tell you.
I'm in need of a huge loan now. I will make an appoingment with SMU's financial aid department, but has anyone else already gotten a loan? If so, What loan did you get? Unfortunatly I didn't qualify for anything with the FAFSA
lisa333: I emailed lizzie about the non-attached attachment. I have it and can email it to you.
Lilgumble: The Red Cross offers CNA classes. I'm up in Santa Rosa and they offer 8-week PT classes and 4-week FT classes all year long. I think it's about $1200.00 including testing. If you don't mind me asking, what was your GPA and NET scores? I don't have any experience either, but I was told at an orientation that experience is not necessary...
Hmm... I'm a little suspicious of the CNA course I was looking at then. I'm in Hayward and there's one offered for 19days and $900, but it doesn't include the test. Maybe I should look up a Red Cross CNA course in my area instead.
I was told that experience was not necessary too, and when I asked Pat Harrison (back in last April) if I should start volunteering for experience she said not to and just focus on keeping my GPA up. I understand why they would give preference to those who have experience, and maybe some years there aren't as many experienced people who apply. I hope adding a little experience as a CNA will help though. It will help me with the essay/letter part and it will also be helpful to have healthcare professionals write my letters of rec.
I have a 3.7 GPA for the last 90 units, 3.8 for the science prereqs and I scored a 90 on the NET. The NET reading section got me... I got 100% on the math, but the weird little story about hoot owls got me. I don't think the reading portion of the NET is a good indicator of your reading comprehension level. Maybe I just needed to study the format of the questions and answers better. Who knows....?
LilGumble, wow, you're GPA and NET are very close to mine. The Reading Comp got me as well. Now I am nervous!!! What number are you on the waiting list and which campus? did you ask anyone why you were put on the waiting list? Are you just guessing that it's due to lack of experience?
Who is the CNA program given by that you found in Hayward?
I am very far down on the waiting list. I received a letter in the mail that had the reclassification paper in it. I filled it out and sent it to admissions with my transcripts from fall 08. Hopefully we can get into the fall class. I tried calling to SMC to see if there was anything else I needed to do and they have not returned my call.
StarBelly - No, I haven't asked if that's why for sure so it's just my guess. Oakland was my #1 pick, then SM and SF. I'm 29 on the waitlist. What about you? I just finished my microbio this week, so I need to send in that paper work, and I'm also schedule to take my CPR/BLS the first week of April, SO... I have to wait till then for my school to have all my transcripts ready so I'm hoping to mail that all in with the reclassification form by the second week of April... That's SO close to when the programs starts though. I'm kind of not counting on getting in anymore...
I just talked so a rep at The Cornerstone College and the guy said they have classes of 15 ppl starting each month and the program is approved and certified by the CDHS. For $900 there are 50 classroom, 8 lab and 100 clinical hours and they have a 99% pass rate for the American Red Cross exam. I'm guessing it's alright then. I can't find CNA classes anywhere on the Red Cross website anyway...
Starbelly, thanks for the offer about emailing the reclassification form but if Lizzie's sending them in the mail, I should probably wait to see if I end up getting on the waitlist before I worry about reclassifying.
The CNA classes sound intriguing. What's the market like for an unexperienced CNA? I took a class to be a certified phlebotomist in October, without doing much research, only to find that there are no jobs for unexperienced phlebotomists. It was a fun class and made me feel comfortable drawing blood all day, but that wasn't really worth the price tag.

I took Microbiology online through Rio Salado Community College and they start classes often. It costs more because I was not a resident of Arizona, but it worked out better to be able to get the class by the required time. Just a thought!
