Anyone applying to Emory Fall 2013

U.S.A. Georgia

Hi everyone, I know there is a lot of time to apply but I missed the deadline for Fall 2012 and I was just wondering if anyone else is applying. This is a really good website to share information etc.

Thanks.

meeep, when i was applying to nursing school, i had the same question because i have heard of so many people discuss these concerns. it was discouraging, but i felt that with emory, i could make connections and at least get my foot in the door. and that's exactly what i've been doing and what you have to do! jobs are not handed to new nurses so easily now-a- days. i've became close with 4 recent emory grads, and i know for certain that they have all been hired at children's, st. joseph's, northside, and one has an opportunity as a public health nurse in alaska.

what i have seen is that there is a lot of competition when landing nursing positions with the fall of the economy, there are many people who are qualified, so.. sometimes you get landed an opportunity because of "who you know." thus, i feel the reputation of your nursing program can play a role of who you can meet and how you are chosen from a pool of other graduates. the more positive points when deciding if you will be a great asset to the hospital, the more likely you are of receiving the position. clinical rotations were also a deciding factor when i chose emory. you have many options and clinical experiences at excellent hospitals here. if a recent graduate at emory puts forth the effort to obtaining a nursing job (great interview, professionalism, resume' is done well, follow-up with the recruiter, great references or connections, etc), i don't think they have anything to worry about. i am confident that i will be hired as a new nurse upon graduation at emory next year.

i hope that answers your question. i apologize is took me a little long to reply but i have 2 nurse externships this summer and school begins in 1 month. it's been kind of hectic but keep the questions coming :)

Hi yuna_cry,

sorry for the late response. I passed the CNA certification by the way, it wasn't hard at all. From what I was told NA deals more with activities with daily livings while NT does ekg, machine type of stuff and also ADLs. I already have so many jobs trying to hire me having the certification. The hospitals that hired me told me that NA are hired more than NT. Sorry, I can't really explain the difference but here's a link that can help you.

Shiningstar05, thank you so much for informing us about the nursing program! I have one question, is it easier to take the marta? I heard that traffic is hectic down there and I was wondering if it's easier to just go to the marta station instead of driving all the way down there. I prefer to drive, but I heard a lot of Emory students are using public transportation. Thanks.

Hello everyone,

I have a few questions and if you can help me I would appreciate it. I'm checking my schedule for this coming semester while comparing what else I need to take for the bsn application. For humanities, it says you need one english composition class and 3 other humanities electives. I already took Engl 1101&1102, but a friend told me that means I need a literature class because engl 1101/1102 does not count. For the other 3, I already have music appreciation, religion and I need one more. Is it better to take communication or philosophy? Also for the social sciences it says you need one in either history , economics, or political science. I took U.S history I and II, political science and I'm about to take economics this semester. I'm really confused, am I supposed to only take one? Anyways, what classes are you guys taking next sem? Microbiology with lab is really what I have to focus this sem, I got all of the other labs already.

I think communication/speech as well as critical thinking (which is a Philosophy course) will both serve you well in your career as a nurse, so it's really just personal preference. I believe you only need one of the history/econ, etc, but I would e-mail Rachel in admissions just to be sure. She is super helpful and responds quickly.

thanks meep! are you taking any nursing electives? or what electives are you taking ?

lafemme,

I had Rachel take a look at my transcript and based on what she told me, the two english classes should suffice for the prereqs. Also, I have only taken 2 history and 2 government classes and she said that I did not need political science or macro/micro economics. Do you have her contact information? She is extremely helpful and can answer all of these questions for you!! :)

I'm taking Humanities through the arts, and I was planning on taking British Lit, as I thought, like you, that we needed that extra English, but I think I will double check with Rachel and see if Comp I & II is sufficient.

Has anyone taken the TEAS yet? This is the first year that Emory is requiring the TEAS for admissions, so I'm not even sure what a competitive score would be. I was informed that, based on last year's numbers, the average GPA for admitted students is around 3.55.

thanks bnmatlock! I emailed her this morning, but you already answered my questions. I already took the TEAS last year, I was applying to go to kenessaw but changed my mind. My score was a 89 and I didn't study at all. I'm going to take it again on September at Mercer, I bought the TEAS V book to bump my score a lil bit more (it is really helpful). I'm almost done with all my pre-reqs and Idk what I'm going to do spring semester, I'll probably just take extra classes to help my gpa. Did ya'll take microbiology with lab already? how is it? Also, I'm wondering if you guys took any Computing class? like ITECH? I don't think emory requires it, but a lot of other nursing schools requires it. I really don't want to take it, but just making sure I have other school to go to, if I don't make it at Emory :/. btw if you guys don't mind sharing your gpa and how many credit hours do you have so far? Thanks.

@meep

So glad I don't have to take any literature class. let me know what she said about the engl comp class.

Also, how many credit hours do you guys have so far? Thanks.

My current GPA is a 3.65 and I will be taking Chemistry, Statistics, and A&P 2 this semester. I'm hoping that brings it up, but I still have to take Organic Chemistry and Micro next semester and then I will be done. I want to say that I have around 54 credit hours as of right now and I haven't taken ITECH. I live in Texas and I haven't noticed that any of the nursing schools require anything like that.

That's a great score! I bought the ATI study manual and I am crossing my fingers that I can score in that range when I take the TEAS in early October. What kind of volunteer experience do you have? I work full-time and it was not an option for me to change career fields while working on prereqs, so i am trying to make up for my lack of experience working in the medical field with hospital volunteer hours and shadowing.
