Anyone applying to Emory Fall 2013

U.S.A. Georgia

Published

Hi everyone, I know there is a lot of time to apply but I missed the deadline for Fall 2012 and I was just wondering if anyone else is applying. This is a really good website to share information etc.

Thanks.

That is a great gpa keep it up! I'm pretty much done with all my pre-reqs, I just need micro and im just taking a few classes so I can be a full time student. I have a 3.9 GPA as of now. I'm still debating if I should take Itech. I just really need to be full time for this sem and next sem. As for volunteering, I got my CNA certification this summer and I will be working at an assisted living facility or a hospital. I never had a job or any type of health care experience so having the certification will help me, hopefully. While I'm getting the experience, I can also save up for books and the tuition for Emory. I really recommend going to school to be a CNA, if you have the time. Btw, you should do great considering you bought the ATI study manual. I should've studied the first time and I really recommend taking the TEAS while you can still remember A&P. It is great that you live in Texas, are you going to dorm at Emory? or do you have family down here in ga?

Great GPA!! Sounds like you are on top of everything! I looked into the classes I would need to be a CNA, but by the time I finish I will already be submitting my app with little to no actual experience working as a CNA. It is still an idea that I am throwing around though! How long did it take you to finish the classes and take the required test?

If I get into Emory, I will live on campus..or very close to campus. I don't know anybody in the Atlanta area, so I'll pretty much be flying solo! :) What about you? Have you had a chance to visit the school yet?

Thanks! It took me 3 weeks to finish the class. It was M-F from 8-4. The last week of the class we did clinical rotation at a hospital. Then you need to register for the state test, it took 2 weeks. After you take the written and skills exam, you know if passed or not. I never thought that I could be a CNA, but it is not that bad. First day of clinical, I had to pick up poop that fell on the floor while changing an adult diaper. After what I've been through and the experiences, I really do feel like I could do anything after that. I'm so glad I gave it a try, because you never know until you try it. But I do agree that it's not for everyone. Anyways, it's great that you'll be down here by yourself. More freedom and new people to meet! I really do hope that you get in Emory, maybe we'll see each other and help each other out studying. It'll be great forming a study group. I live an hour away from Emory, I droved past it before but didn't get to see much. I will be visiting when I'm not so busy, the traffic is also horrible.

Ha, sounds like you get to jump right into things when you're a CNA! I'm going to go ahead and sign up for the class next semester so that I can get some experience working with patients before nursing school. From what I've read, it really helps you get used to working with patients. I'm sure I will be lurking this thread up until February when we find out if we are accepted, so I will definitely be in touch! Will you be going to the October open house?.

I didn't know that there is an open house on October, but I'm definitely going. Is it rsvp? or anyone can go?

It is on October 6th from 8AM-12PM. I registered on the nursing website, but I'm not sure if registration is mandatory.

Thank you for letting me know. I registered, it is a Saturday so I should be able to make it.

A word to the wise:

Going to Emory for nursing is NOT worth the price tag. Believe me, been there done that. I appeal to your common sense!! Do not spend tens of thousands of dollars on an education that you could receive elsewhere. You are paying for the name! Don't fall for the sales pitch at orientation. Most every student is digging themselves into a debt hole that will take several years to come out of! You are at the perfect place to make a sensible choice. The staff at Emory is overpaid and financial aid is a joke! What in the world are $2,000 scholarships going to do when tuition is nearly $40,000 a year, that's right a year!

The professors are not all that great and the clinical staff ... Do not, I repeat do not spend $$ that you don't have on education that you can very well get elsewhere at a sensible price. Think about it! You will thank me later ;)

halffull,

Did you graduate from Emory? The cost of tuition is not an issue for me, personally, but I do understand where you are coming from. I will be going to graduate school after nursing and Emory's reputation is one of the many reasons why I am applying. Are you dissatisfied with the program in general or the price tag?

No, I transferred. One of the classes that you will have, you will be basically teaching yourselves (the clinical portion anyway). The patho/pharm class grazes over the material. The clinical portion of the other classes, depending on the instructors, you will be getting the overview and step by step of the clinical skill but if you have any questions or need to go over something in particular, there is usually not enough time and there's absolutely no "after hours" lab practice allowed, if you didn't get it during lab, you're on your own.

The clinical placements for the first semester are okay but depending on the site you could be paying big bucks for basically just standing around most of the day. The clinical instructors are supposed to have you there for a certain amount of time but sometimes (and most of them) they don't keep you there the entire time making you get less for your money. This also means less exposure to clinical skills. Unfortunately, it is very likely that you will never get to practice some of the skills that you learn in lab.

I wouldn't recommend it unless you can afford it. However you will not be getting your money's worth, it that is okay with you, then go for it. Graduate students at Emory come from different schools not just Emory. Being an Emory undergrad certainly helps but doesn’t guarantee acceptance into their program. Some graduate students have difficulty finding clinical sites for their hours and others feel they are not prepared for seeing patients due to this. I’d recommend that you talk to different students there, not just the student ambassadors and certainly not the ones that have full scholarships, these students have nothing but praises for Emory. Just think about it.

hi everybody!

i had applied to emory for fall 2012 but got waitlisted because my school didnt send my transcripts on time im pretty sure if they had i couldve gotten accepted so im going to re apply for fall 2013

i already have my essay done since it's the same essay from last year so all i need to do is send in my transcripts so ideally i should have everything sent in by the end of the month. I need to re take my teas though because my score isnt great at all i scored a 78

the price tag however does worry me because my brother goes to Med school at Harvard so my parents are already paying out of pocket for that. and the thought of having them pay $40k for an undergrad degree doesnt sit well with me at all so im also looking at public schools like Ga state but theyre sooooo freaking competitive...its like a lose lose situation

Good luck niqu92 :) I wish I had everything taken care of already like you! I'm still working on my essay and I will be taking the TEAS at the end of this month. Are you planning on going to the Open House in October? If you don't mind me asking, what is your current GPA?
