I submitted my completed application on November 23rd and I'm anxiously waiting. I attended the open house in September and fell in love with the program. I just thought I would check in here and see if anyone else is in the same boat. It would be interesting to have someone to commiserate with during this awful waiting game :) :typing
Thanks guys :) & yeah I'm not worried as much as anxious... its so nerve-wracking knowing they have been sending stuff out. & since I'm so impatient I will probably not hear anything until the very end...
someone who got in and visits that yahoo group - would you let me know how many members are on it? Just trying to figure out how many spots have been filled so far...
Hi NewLevel,
I had a 3.51 overall undergrad GPA with a 3.7 major GPA (Business Management). Pre-req's:
Human Anatomy & Physiology - A in both
Microbiology - A
Basic Statistics - A-
General Psychology - B+
General Sociology - B+
English Composition - B
They suggest a class in growth and development and a course in general nutrition and I took both and got A's in them... but I took them to complete requirements for other schools.
I think my recommendations made a huge difference (she brought up specific things they wrote in my interview) and my personal statement. The interview is short but I also think that is important because you show your personality. I am not a great writer... only a decent one, so they saw how much I wanted to be a nurse more from talking than my writing...
Hope this helps!
I have a 3.3 GPA from a Chemistry degree. I could not tell you what my major GPA was, but I believe it is right around a 3.3 as well. I took A LOT of courses in my first degree and was in an Honors program so all my general education requirements were Honors enriched. I am not sure if this helped my low GPA or not.
In my pre-reqs, I made:
Anatomy- B+
Physiology-A
Psychology-A
Statistics-A
Microbiology-B
I am currently enrolled in Sociology.
I did not take a nutrition course or a development course. I am currently working in research.
I am not a great writer either. I do think that I had good recommendation letters, but I have not seen them to verify that. In my interview, I tried to convey my passion for a career in nursing. I am also really interested in pursuing an doctoral degree and I talked about that. I hope this helped!
I also talked about what I wanted to do after the BSN program... so I think that is good. I think they want to know you have a "direction"... whether you follow through is never certain, but I think they like to know you have thought this through to the point that you KNOW this is what you want and where you want it to go.
I'm new to this site. I am applying for the Spring 2010..sounds so far away, program. This is new to Duke, with twice a year enrollment. I also went to the information session in September. If you were accepted what do you think it was that made you stand out? Does everyone applying have a medical background? Thanks for any info or tips for applying.
Hey ncgal......
I was accepted into Duke a few days ago shortly after my interview. I honestly hated myself after the interview because there were things that I wish I would have said that I didnt. I didnt think that I did as well as I could have in my interview but I guess I did better than I thought. I am not sure what they thought I stood out but I do know that one of my interviewers asked me about being on the track team and what I learned from being a scholarship athlete. Also, we talked about my background in counseling (I have a masters degree and counseling and am a licences professional counselor) and how that would help me in the nursing field. I am guessing that those are probably the things that stood out. Besides the volunteer work that I have done, I didn't have a medical background. I was actaully suprised that I was accepted because I had a terrible semester in college when I was pledging and my semester gpa was terrible. I am just glad that they looked at the whole picture. I didn't have to submit GRE scores because I had a masters degree. My undergradue GPA was ok not that great and my graduate GPA was perfect......so they definately consider the whole picture and not just one semester.
Anyways good luck!

Hi MDiG516,
What I meant was that I had many plans if I were to get accepted. I loved Dukes program. I will continue looking for other schools. I did my best on my interview and that what makes me at peace.
