Anyone applying to Cyfair or Kingwood college for Spring08?

Published

I am applying with a 11.489, and I hope to get in. If there is anyone that is already in either of these programs that can give me advice,or what they like/dislike about either one would be greatly appreciated! :0

How far is everyone driving to get to class? I'm coming from Katy :uhoh3:.

I am coming from downtown and can catch 59 north right from my house which is good because I will be going against traffic. I am going to the Nov. 26 orientation.

Which schedule are you going to request? I picked Mon/Tue 1230-1500 with Thursday clinical. I hope I get it.

I am originally from Alaska (Anchorage).

I still have to get my last hep B shot and get CPR certified. I do have a CNA (certified nurse aide certificate) so hopefully I won't have to take RSNG Prep class. I am currently taking Pharm and have a B. If anyone needs to take Pharm PLEASE take Cinquemani. She allows three pages of notes for each test and you can use a drug book. She is a FABULOUS teacher. Plus the Pharm math test are not hard. One the first math test I got an 86 and on the next two I got 100s on both.

Don't worry about driving from Katy. It's only three days a week and not during rush hour traffic so you will be fine. The payoff will be good in the end. ;)

There is a thin book you can buy that is made by the Hesi people. I checked it out from Houston Community College. I recommend you do all of the math problems in the book (which is not many). There will be military time, fractions, things like converting g to mg to mcg, roman numerals. The questions in that book are EXACTLY what is going to be on the test. The entire book only has about 50 pages.

As far as the reading portion is concerned, I checked out a book on reading from the public library that had lots of passages and questions regarding those passages to help me. I suggest you really sit and take the time to read each passage and question on the test. The test is not timed.

I stressed over the test so much and when I got in there I thought it was actually easy. If I would have slowed down and read each question in the reading I would have done much better. Do the math or reading first and the grammar last so you wont be fatigued by the end of the test.

Hey guys! :monkeydance:I got into Kingwood too! I got my letter on Thursday but I had family in from out of town all weekend so I'm just now getting a chance to get on and let yall know! So it looks like everyone from our thread got in! Yay us! I'm going to the 11/26 orientation. Did yall turn in your letter of intent yet? I was so excited I hand delivered mine friday! I choose the M/T 5-8 and saturday as first choice just in case I decide to keep my corporate job for a little while. My drive is actually great since I just bought a house in Kingwood! I live off northpark so it's about 2 minutes for me! After driving across town everyday for work for the past 5 years I am so happy to finally be close to home and school! I also got my last hep B shot on friday, did my background check this morning, updated my CPR last month, finished pharmacology over the summer and am currently enrolled in a CNA class that ends December 6th, so I should be good to go!

As for the HESI I only took it once. Its really not all that hard at all.

Congrats to everyone! Now we can all celebrate!

Thank you! If you go to the nursing homepage at kingwood college on the left hand side with all the application procedures and such it says background check. If you click on it, it will bring up the directions for the background check from their preferred vendor. I'm sure they will give us the info at orientation, but I did it so early because I need it for my CNA class by this thurday anyways and since it cost me $55 I decided to kill 2 birds with one stone!

As for the CPR training class, actually kingwood college offers it. Well all the colleges do in the NHMCCD so you can take it at any campus. Kingwood has a class this saturday the 17th, then another one december 15th, all day from 8-5. Each campus usually offers it once a month or so, some do weekdays and some do saturdays. Just look it up online. Its under continuing education classes. I never knew they offered the cpr classes because I didn't think search under continuing education. I think we have to have the cpr done by the time we start clinicals. I'm sure they will let us know everything at orientation, I'm just so excited and wanted to get everything done way in advance! :lol2:

I kind of wish I applied in Kingwood too so I don't have to retake Pharmacology. I've taken them last year in TC and got a B on it, but since Cy-fair has its own Pharma class, I have to either retake it or take a Pharma Hesi and score at least 750? and I heard the passing rate is not very high either, so that there sucks! The reason why I didn't bother to apply in Kingwood is I live in Magnolia and I thought it would be too far for me to go to school, but you all said you can actually pick your day and time of classes and only three days a week? that would have been fine for me. I also heard good and positive things about the nursing program in Kingwood...Oh well, it's too late now.

Cad4296.... you said they offer CPR in any NHMCC campuses? I've heard of that before but I didn't bother to enroll because I was not sure if that's the CPR they required for all the nursing students to take. Are you sure they'll accept that? I registered in Red Cross CPR for the professional rescuer and paid $55 for it for Dec. 15th schedule. Is the Cpr they offered in school free?

As for the background check, I got mine at http://www.certifiedbackground.com and choose the standard student package.

Congrats to us all... yeahhh. Once the program started, I hope we'll all continue to update each others progress and pour each others frustration in this thread. I think i'm outnumbered though. Most of you here are going to Kingwood College, but that's ok. We'll continue this thread anyway. What do you all say.

You all have a good week!!

I have heard horrible things about CyFair and was actually going to decline it if I got accepted. I went to the orientation for Kingwood and felt so good about it. They do everything they can to work with you! I believe I can make it. There were some women there whose first choice were CyFair but they didnt get it, and people were encouraging them not to go there, to stay at Kingwood. Plus Cy-Fair is a 6 semester program whereas Kingwood is 4. Also Kingwood is supposed to come out with a totally online program for fall 08 if you have a previous bachelors degree. Maybe you can go to Cy Fair for the first semester and transfer. How many days a week do you have to go at Cy Fair. Actually Cy-Fair was going to be my first choice but I started doing research and asking questions and I changed my mind.

Good luck

Memargz35, that sucks that you have to retake pharm! Its silly since its all in the same college district. I'm pretty sure its the same case for Cy-Fair, but I know for kingwood (and most healthcare companies) you need the CPR through the American Heart Association not the Red Cross. NHMCCD does have the CPR, BLS for healthcare providers course. You register under continuing education and its under there. Its not free, but its $42 so cheaper than what you are paying. If you log in and click on search for continuing education courses, type in "CPR healthcare providers" and it will pull up all the classes available.

You said Cy-Fair's pass rate isn't that high? That's terrible. Kingwood's is 97%. Like SkyGoddess said at the orientation they are just so warm and friendly and positive. I think its going to be a great atmosphere. They seem really excited to teach and help us learn and just really want us to succeed. I hope Cy-Fair's program is just as helpful. I didn't really research them as much as I should have before applying, but kingwood was closer to home so it all worked out for me.

So has everyone registered yet? I went and registered this morning so I'm all set to go! Now I'm just working on getting all those books we need!

cad what times and days did you register for? Did you go in person? I did my background check and have my hepB shots finished. I started pricing books. I am not buying any of the optional books. When you take out the optional books, its only about 8-10 books to buy. That piece of paper makes it look like a hundred books. Which orientation did you go to? Yesterdays or last weeks?

I did the Monday/Wednesday nights and Saturday clinicals. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to keep my full time job so I got a schedule that works with it for now. I went in person this morning. I had a friend who tried to do it via email, but then ended up just going in because she was tired of waiting on them. I priced only the required books and it still came out to around $600 or so. Its just hard when you need so many books at once! I went to last weeks orientation. What schedule are you wanting?

"Maybe you can go to Cy Fair for the first semester and transfer. How many days a week do you have to go at Cy Fair."

Sky,

I don't think they allow transfer from one colleges to another, especially Cy-fair. As of how many days a week we go, I think we have to go Monday thru Friday but I heard we do have a choice on what time of day we can go whether in the morning or afternoon. I should know all the information I need to know during orientation, which will be on Dec. 10.

Tomball college was really my first choice since it's closer to me but I don't want to wait another semester for it. I applied for the fall of 07 but didn't got in to any of the colleges, so I decided to retake my A&P II during the summer. I have a B on that and I was trying to make it to an A to boast up my score and I did. My score went up to 11.5 something but don't want to wait for the fall semester to reapply so I applied in Cy-fair and cy-fair alone. Didn't even put kingwood as my 2nd choice. Oh well.. I've been hearing Cy-fair's program is really really hard and that you practically have no life once the program start. That's ok.. it's only temporary. If I can survive!!!

Cad,

It's the pharma hesi is what i'm talking about when I say Cy-fair's passing rate is not that high. I heard most of the people that already took Pharmacology in different campuses took the hesi in Cy-fair and ended up failing so they have to retake the course.

As of the CPR, Cyfair said they will take Red cross as well, which is the cpr for the professional rescuer. But I might check the school's CPR info you gave me, thanks for that by the way. I think they'll let us know more about it too during orientation. Besides, I have until Dec. 14 to cancel my registration from Red cross, If i have to.

My bestfriend is in Cy-fair's RN program right now. She's surviving but she said it's really hard. The two campuses that I heard a lot of positive feedbacks are Kingwood and North Harris. I know some people that are in TC's program right now and they said it's not easy too but not as hard as Cy-fair plus the staff are more helpful and more cooperative. I guess I will know all of that once the school starts.

I plan to enjoy my life right now and spending as much time with my family as I can since I won't be doing much of that once school start.

Good luck to us all!!!

Margz
