Anyone applying to ASN program at Santa Fe CC in Gainesville, FL?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I just applied for the first time to the RN program at SFCC in Gainesville, FL. They are on a points system and its very competitive like all the other programs out there. Anyway, just wanted to see if there was anyone else out there that applied or is going to apply there. Maybe we could chat while we wait out decisions arriving in the mail.

I submitted my application Friday, deadline is May 31st. I won't find out until the first week of July. Its not uncommon to not get in the first time around. I had also applied to UF's accelerated BSN program and got rejected. Not looking forward to another rejection, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if that happens here too. Just anxious and this wait is going to be terrible.

Its supposed to be a great program and I really hope that I get the opportunity to be a part of it.

Anyway, good luck to anyone who is applying!

I dont know if you know but on the sfcc nursing website there is some reading that is gonna be required fo us. Girl I have looked at it but thats it.LOL. I will buckle down and study it today. My cousin says we will have to know this so she told me if I wanted an early start this is basically the foundation.

Butterfly: I already did that whole package. It was very interesting, and I learned a lot.

Currently I am reading: Fluids and Electrolytes made Incredibly Easy.

Wow, you're way ahead of the game!LOL. I've heard some good things about those books.

I try to be as prepared as possible. I am a bit anal when it comes to, well just about everything. Organization and preparation is the key to a happy and successful life, well at least in my eyes.

The book I am reading is good. I have quite a bit left, but I also have quite a bit of time to finish it up. Hopefully I will be done by next weekend.

Nothing wrong with that, I wish I was more organized! I see you want to do PEDs, so do I was thinking either doing mother baby or doing the PICU. Do you know where you would possibly work?

Most likely PICU. I volunteered with the Pediatric Congenital Heart Center last year, so I did rounds in the PICU. I will work at Shands, in the PICU after graduation. My mom wants me to just go to the Peds Ward following graduation so I get some organizational skills when it comes to juggling patients, but both myself and the physicians I rounded with think I will do wonderful just going into the PICU. It is intense and taxing, but I love it.

However, you talked about Mother and Baby...I hate Mother and Baby and LD. I want nothing to do with that, so it is yours for the taking, lol.

Awww.. c'mon you don't know what you're missing!LOL!! Im sure I will change my mind at least 20 times when nursing school starts but I just love babies so thats why I said Mother Baby. I'm getting over the jitters and now Im more excited and ready for the two years to be over. What I really want to do is work in a Peds ER but of course we don't have that here in Gainesville so the PICU is the next best thing.

We do have a group that's primary job in the ED is to treat peds. ED and PICU are two completely different places. I don't think there is any comparison. If you like babies, I think Mother's and Babies would be best. The PICU is also really small? Are you planning on trying to get a job at Shands when you are done?

Yeah, I already work there in the ED. You're right there is no comparing the two. I think in St Petersburg there is an Childrens hospital with an Peds ED, so thats where I will eventually like to go. But I am definitely gonna consider Mother Baby whenever we do our rotation because when I had my son I had the best nurse and she was so encouraging to me and let me know that she graduated nursing school with 3 young children. I was like whoa!

That is pretty cool. I couldn't imagine having children, let alone going to school while I had them and I'm a nanny. How old is your son? Your husband is going to have his hands full when you start in August.

How did you do in your pre-req classes? Do you feel ready for nursing school? Academically how do you think you will do?

I don't recommend anyone have kids until after you have a good income and are much holder then I was, which was at age 20. If I didn't have the confidence or the support of my family I wouldn't be able to do this. I did really well in my prereqs and correqs actually. I completed my AA and I can't say that it was easy or hard but I am glad I did it. I'm as ready as the next person I think. With the exception of you!!!LOL!!! From your post I can tell you are very organized and stay on top of things. I would be doing it if I didn't think I could succeed and I know I will, its will be verrrrrrrrrrrrrrry hard! I know a couple of girls who got in last year got pregnant and now are gonna be graudating with you and me. Again I don't reccomend it and I am in no way saying you know having babies or children during nursing school is easy but defintiely doable. He is five by the way.

I can't believe all these people get pregnant and have babies while in nursing school. I just don't understand why. It is very hard for me to comprehend. I also think people don't have an understanding of how truly difficult it is to raise a child. I don't know. I am still 10 years away from kids...
