Hi, everyone! I am a wife with 2 kids, 15 and 9. My husband is out of country now and for four more weeks. I am taking Spanish 1 and nutrition at DSC now to be able to apply to UCF at Daytona next year. I have a 4.0 GPA and 75 teas score. I don't think I have time to study to take another teas test with my summer classes. I am Chinese learning Spanish. It is not easy! I am just gonna hope that not everyone apply has a 4.0 GPA. I like to read your story if you like to share.:)
It'll depend obviously on whether you are a Florida resident or not, but my in-state tuition for Spring was $2454.60 and Summer was $1962.81, though for summer I did take an elective - if you have something that they'll consider an elective, you can petition to have it count as a nursing elective instead of having to take another one. Things like medical terminology don't count, something like a genetics course may, to give you an example. But don't worry about that right now! Focus on Spring first haha. :)
Financial aid won't really be able to help you with your question. I had the same issue with Pell this year and was really nervous about not being able to pay for classes. But what I was told is it's not really decided until closer to the summer term how they're going to handle financial aid, so what they did this summer may not hold true for next summer. I did get my leftover Pell for summer from the fall since I didn't use it, but there is no guarantee of that being the case next summer. Something to keep in mind, maybe try to look into some private loans just for summer so you have a backup plan.
Yeah, you should be able to get titers drawn to prove your immunity, though be warned, they can be kind of pricey. Most insurance I don't think covers that sort of thing. My Varicella titer was at least $100 I think, and that was only for one. In a few cases, you may be better off just getting the immunizations over again. I'd check into that as well :)
The hardest part of the first semester was definitely trying to figure out time. You're going to feel like you don't have any time to do anything but read and study and you're mostly right. We had classes all day Monday and Wednesday and had clinical all day anywhere from once to three times a week some weeks. The hardest part was being exhausted after clinical and coming home after being up since 4 am and getting home at 6-7pm most days and having tons of reading to do and being just entirely too tired to do anything at all. It was just overwhelming and stressful. But the clinicals and labs were really fun. And yeah, some of the clinicals were all over the place, but they try to put you in the location closest to where you live if they can. They really do try to be accommodating.
Anyway I hope that helps! Feel free to keep asking anything you can come up with and I'll try to answer the best I can. Just keep in mind I'm not like an official person who has any say in anything, so any or all of what I'm saying could change. But I thought it might help to at least see what we went through so you can have an idea of what you could expect.
Thanks Kay,
I was also wondering about the uniforms. Are they completely white? And are you able to purchase your brand of choice or do thay have to be a certain type? I love greys anantomy. A little pricey, but sooo comfy. Also, do you have any information on scholarships and when they become available to us as incoming juniors? And one last thing, Would you happen to have a book list that you could email me. I would love to get a jump start on looking for the best deals. Do you keep your books through the entire program? Are there some that the school tells you to buy that you really dont use/need? I know the titles and editions could change from year to year but I would really like to start researching, so if you have the titles or the book list that would be just awesome. Am I able to leave my personal email address here on allnurses? Thanks again for all you help. You rock:D
Naomi
P.S Are there any guys in your class??
There were 5 guys but one dropped halfway through first semester.
I don't know much about scholarships unfortunately The uniforms have to be exactly what they specify, mostly because they are embroidered with UCF on them. They have to be a specific style from Landau. For most clinical rotations and for lab, you'll be wearing all white. For two clinical rotations though, you wear navy blue bottoms. And they still have to be the same style.
They said we wouldn't have to buy many books considering the extensive list they gave us for first semester, but so far we've generally had to buy books every semester. :/
Hi, everybody.
I am in VA visiting my mother-in-law now but I am checking this thread often to see anybody else posted anything. I hope the letter will come next week. It has been a long 4 weeks..... I wonder how many people apply this time. Sorry about my grammer or spelling since English is my second language. I live in Port Orange and go to DSC now. I really wish I can get in and get my BSN in 18 months. I don't mind "not having a life" in the program. Having 2 kids and 2 dogs and a husband is pretty busy, too. I love the challenge. I hope to hear more from you all soon.
Demi.

Hi, Kay:
You are a great help! Thank you so much for doing this. I won't be able to get a document of immunization from my country. Does this mean if I have the titer test, it will show all the shot I had before? I am also interested about the scholarship that UCF has. Do you know anything about it? I still have three classes left to get my AA. I will get it this fall. I expect it is not easy in a 18 month program, but what do you think it is the most challenging so far? Is it like a full time student with lots test and homework or even harder? How many semesters you alredy done? Do you really need to drive around the county to have your clinic done?
Thanks again.
