I applied to UF's Accelerated BSN program for Summer 2009. The application deadline passed 2 weeks ago, and I am anxiously awaiting a reply. I hate waiting! If anyone has been through the program, I was wondering if you remembered when you found out if you got in or not. Is anyone out there also waiting to find out if you got into the program?
Hi everyone,Does anyone know how many people get accepted at a time to the Accelerated BSN? I'm at USF in Tampa now and they only take 24! It's ridiculous. Just trying to do some research on other FL schools.
Thanks?
We had 60 get into our program but several (15?) seats came from grant money given to the VA in Gainesville which partners with UF's college of nursing.
Hi everyone, I am so bummed I missed lunch, work has been ridiculously busy the last few weeks. I will definitely be at the next one. BTW I got my badge yesterday and it feels super official now, I reallly can't wait to get started!
Hi Margaret.
Nice to hear from you. Naime, Shaunna and I were able to find each other, but Ashley showed up and we missed er. That was completely my fault. So let's go ahead and plan to have lunch. How 'bout on Thu, 4/16 at 1230? I get out of work at 1230, so I'll get there about 1245. Would you like to pick the restaurant this time?

Can clinical shoes have any cloth on them?
Yes, mine are running shoes. Just no holes.
Also, do we start over with a new GPA?
Yes and no. Yes, if you are new to UF then your UF GPA is brand new (unfortunately). But also no, you still have your overall cumulative GPA that averages all your grades from all the undergraduate colleges you ever attended. I'm still not sure how they work those 6 graduate credits in there...I know they count toward your UF nursing GPA but I'm not sure about the cum GPA.
Hi All! Thanks for the wonderful information re: textbooks & supplies. Congrats to my fellow classmates.. Are you all ready? I cannot believe we only have 5 weeks until we start :) I have little healthcare experience (shadowed at Shands for a few weeks) so am a little nervous for clinicals but I think it is going to be a blast!
For anyone currently in the program will we get the entire summer break off (June 22-26)? If so, is it possible to travel during this time or will we be overloaded with homework?
TIA

Yes, you get the whole week off :-D Whether or not you feel like you can travel is an individual decision. I went home to the panhandle, and I also went to NY the first weekend of June, so it's possible. Lots of people did travel, so it's entirely possible. You have a couple papers and projects but if you work ahead and efficiently you have plenty of time to yourself over breaks.
Also, for anyone who is interested: I had some scrubs (white and otherwise) donated to me when I started the program. Clearly I never want to wear white scrubs ever again ;-) so if anyone is in the G-ville area feel free to PM me and we can set up a meet place. I have some colored tops and bottoms too that I don't want anymore that I'd be willing to give away. After all, they were given to me. I just ask you pass them on to the next class if they're still in good shape.
They're mostly smalls (the whites are a small) but some of the patterned tops could easily be mediums.
I'm hoping to be a part of the accBSN in 2010, but I am enjoying all the excitement that the 2009 class is sharing on here, hope y'all don't mind my "crashing" the party ...

You sound like a nice group, sorry I'm missing out this year. Anyway, I was looking for advice on the following:
As far as letters of references go, I was hoping to ask my A&P professor who I plan to take for both I and II this summer, I assume this would be fine. The 2nd one I am on the fence about. I do volunteer work at the local hospital so I was thinking of asking my direct supervisor there, or instead asking for one from my prior employer which is not in a health-related area. I'm inclined to ask the volunteer supervisor who will have known me for about 8 months by the time the letter is written. Any advice? I'm wondering whether length of time knowing the person affects the quality of the reference.
Thanks!

Paco386: My references were my sociology professor from a community college and a supervisor from a completely non-health-related job I'd worked at 7 months. I think your references are much stronger. I know that if I'd had healthcare experience like you, that would have been my preference. I think 8 months is plenty of time for a supervisor to get to know you. Go with the supervisor at the hospital!
HI Paco, From everything I have learned through this process is that the ABSN really does not care much about previous healthcare experience. I think they pride themselves on having students from a variety of different fields, and it seems they want to hear about your work experiences outside of the healthcare world. With that said, I would get a letter from the person you think will say the best things about you, obviously! But really your best bet is to get letters from all three sources. There isn't really a limit on how many you can have, you just have to have atleast two. Now, I wouldn't go sending in 6, but 3 will give you an edge. I sent in 2 academic and one professional, and I think my third letter definitely was one of the keys to me getting in. Good Luck!
