Any WCCCD nurses out there?

I'm a December '03 grad from Wayne County Community College of Detroit, Michigan. I received my RN officially on Feb 26, 2004.

Don't worry about it.

I went to WCCD and Just got accepted to UofM. I don't think it matters! :chuckle

WCCD is a good school and I felt I learned alot!

You should weigh all of your options. If you call and ask someone in the nursing department they will tell you that it doesn't mean anything, unless your going into the Military. I find it strange that all of the other nursing schools are accredited and Wayne Co. is not. Also you will have to travel to Greenfield Road and Tireman down in Detroit for some of your training to the Northwest campus, that is one area I would rather avoid myself. Rough and dangerous neighborhood. I have already applied to other schools and have been accepted in the school itself. There are a few more pre nursing courses I have to take to get in any other nursing program. Some of those classes Wayne Co., doesn't even offer. Such as the Lifespan and the Chemistry classes needed at other schools. So I am going to finish up what I can at Wayne Co. and then transfer out. Good luck to you.

I'm also at WCCCD and thinking of transferring - sometimes, I consider giving up on nursing because of the waiting list situation. I would like to relocate in order to finish school, but housing would be a problem. I wish you the best in your endeavours. Hang in there !!!

I found a few University's that will accept you without the waiting list in our area. I don't know if that is an option for you, but there is a lot of financial aid at these University's that will help you with tuition. University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan U and University of Detroit Mercy all have good programs. Look in to these before relocating. I have just sent all of my info and application to University of Detroit Mercy and waiting to hear back from them. They have been sending me letters about financial aid and their school. It sounds like a great school. How far along are you with your pre req's at WCCCD? I will be finishing up my last pre req this summer. If you go on to the University level you will need to take two chem classes. The plus to the 4 year schools is you will go straight into your nursing classes and receive the financial aid the state of Michigan gives nursing students. Wayne State also has a good program. Look around before you decide to leave the area. We have awesome schools here in our area. Good luck to you also.

I am a current student of Madonna University right now majoring in Forensic Science. I want to change my major to Nursing. I am considering going to WCCCD and have already applied. Someone just told me a few days ago that a lot of hospitals offer a program where they will pay for your schooling if you agree to work for them for a certain amount of time after you get your degree. If this is true, I can't find a hospital that does it! If anyone knows of any, PLEASE let me know.

My plan is to find a hospital that will pay my tuition and stay at Madonna for the BSN program. If I can't, then I want to go to WCCCD and obtain my Associates and just get my RN License. Once I do that I figured I could go work at a hospital and they would probably reimburse my tuition and I would start on my BSN degree. I applied to WCCCD and just got a letter back saying they would accept 16 credit hours. I HAVE 42! Do they not accept credits from Western Michigan University? I was thinking maybe they just got my WMU transcript later than the others and didn't include those credits when they mailed me my others. I don't know what i should do! someone guide me.

I'm thinking about applying to WCCD next year because I'm sick of being on MCC waiting list. After reading some of the posts here, I'm a bit concerned!

I took a trip to WCCD today with my mother because I had plans to attend the information meeting. After my mother viewed the area, she told me to apply at Oakland University (OU) instead. The program may be wonderful, but the area really sucks and they are not accredited! Now, I have to take a few additional classes at OU, but OU are actively seeking minority students, so maybe I will luck out.

P.S. WCCD is far from me, but I really wanted to attend a diverse college.

Ok I am going to chime in here and clarify a few things about WCCCD. First off, NLN accreditation is voluntary. Not ALL reputable cc's around here are accredited by the NLN. The only thing that NLN accreditation gets you is a job at the V.A. hospital or military. IF you are not interested in doing either then it doesnt matter about the accreditation. WCCCD's nursing program is accredited by the Michigan board of nursing and that is all that is needed to sit for your NCLEX test. The NCLEX test is a nationwide test which means that if you pass boards in michigan then you should have no problem reciprocating that license in another state. I know of two Universities that will give you up to 36 credits for your RN license alone and if you check out the transfer guides for a BSN most Uni's dont give transfer credit for ASN nursing core classes regardless of the cc.

Rumor has it that WCCCD lost their accreditation with the NLN because they had too many students fail the NCLEX and it has been said that the reason was the math portion. Since then they have completely modified their curriculum and have added a Medical Math class to the general ed requirements that is specific for nursing. This way everyone will have the same foundation for math and as they go through their nursing clinicals they will have a better understanding of dosages and I.Vs. They have to have so many graduating classes sit for and pass the NCLEX with an improved pass average before they can request reinstatement of their accreditation. I personally believe this is what their goal is even if they wont admit to it. ;)

I have attended two of the nursing information meetings and found them to be very informative. I am currently taking three classes at three different campuses one being the Northwest campus, with is located at Greenfield and Joy rd, NOT TIREMAN. It appears to be a rough neighborhood but everyone is so kind there. In fact I have found more positive attitudes at the NW campus than I have found at any other campus. Urbanites are way more down to earth and not so uptight like you find at the suburban campuses. I actually like the NW campus and I am a Suburban born and raised LOL.

I am applying to the program in a few weeks and I am so excited. I will graduate in 2007 a proud WCCCD Nursing grad. I love the diversity there and am very thankful to be going to WCCCD.

For those of you that has graduated from WCCC, can you say where you did clinicals at? And how did you like the program overall! Is it worth going to WCCC?

Question: is it true that their program is easier to get into than other CCs becuase they do not have NLN accrediation and accordingly will have less applicants?

No absolutely NOT true. Just another one of those nasty rumors. The reason WCCCD seems easier to get into is because of the following:

one: they accept more students more often. Look at some of the other CC's entrance procedures. One accepts 40 applicants per year 10 of those being re-applicants. Another one who is not NLN accredited either accepts 80 applicants per year. WCCCD accepts 120 applicants in the Fall and another 120 applicants in the Spring semesters. That is 240 students admitted to the nursing program each year.

two: They will NOT carry a waiting list like other CC's do. So its open for anyone to apply twice a year.

According to the direct of nursing, they have had over 300 applicants each entering semester. I know last fall they had 430 applicants and then in the Spring they had 386 applicants. Their criteria for entrance is GPA, prereqs finsihed, net scores and then you have to write an essay. If you have a good GPA, have completed all your prereqs and got at least a 61 on your NET you should have no problem getting in.
