I am a new student at the Western Campus. I had done some prereq's back in 1988 and 89 and returning this year to finish up where I left off. I will graduate as a nurse in 07' hopefully. Anyone out there with any words of encouragement? and how successful were you at employment after graduation? What types of work did you find employment in ? Med/Surg, Oncology, ICU, etc. Thanks.

I graduated in Dec 2003, passed boards Feb 2004. I work for a local hospital in the IMC unit, and will start orientation for ICU. My friend, who passed a semester after me, is starting in Cardiac Transplant! Go for your dreams. Nursing school is nothing like the real world, but it gives us a basic understanding. The facility where one finds employment should give an orientation. If not, then run awaaaaaay. Good luck!

I am wrapping up two semesters of pre req's and have recently discovered that Wayne County Comm. does not have an accredited nursing program. It is approved by the Michigan Board of Nursing, but the program itself is not accredited. Now I am feeling nervous about this. I will have all of my pre reqs done this summer for entry into the nursing program, yet if I want to move out of state or continue my education later on will this be a problem?. I do plan on moving south, preferrably Kentucky in a few years. I am thinking the worst I guess, but can see a problem with the classes I would take at WCCCD not being accepted at another college. Anyone with any suggestions? I have been considering transferring to Eastern Michigan U, U of M, or Wayne State U. I looked into the other cc's around me, Monroe and Henry Ford and they have waiting lists that would be comparable to a 3 year completion. This would also be the same for me to complete my BSN as I would transfer over as a Sophmore or Junior. I am receiving a grant and I will be 40 years old this year. Time is of the essence, lol. I really am confused on what to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I was going to apply for WCCC, but now I have the same worry and maybe I will change my mind. At the application brochure they sent me, they said their program is NLNAC accredited. Now I called NLNAC, the lady told me the program is no longer accredited after 2001. So I guess the brochure is a pre-2001 version.

You should weigh all of your options. If you call and ask someone in the nursing department they will tell you that it doesn't mean anything, unless your going into the Military. I find it strange that all of the other nursing schools are accredited and Wayne Co. is not. Also you will have to travel to Greenfield Road and Tireman down in Detroit for some of your training to the Northwest campus, that is one area I would rather avoid myself. Rough and dangerous neighborhood. I have already applied to other schools and have been accepted in the school itself. There are a few more pre nursing courses I have to take to get in any other nursing program. Some of those classes Wayne Co., doesn't even offer. Such as the Lifespan and the Chemistry classes needed at other schools. So I am going to finish up what I can at Wayne Co. and then transfer out. Good luck to you.

I've seen some BSN/MSN programs only accept ADN nursing credits from NLNAC accredited schools. So I would agree why taking the unnecessary risks when we have chance to avoid it?

I have a question, when you try to transfer to others school, they do accept the pre-reqs you've taken at a non-NLNAC accredited school, right? Cause I think as long as the school is approriately accredited by higher education commission, their general education courses should be accepted. In this case, you will be fine and nothing to lose as long as the final nursing program you go into is NLNAC accredited.

Yes under the MACRO agreement many classes do transfer over to other colleges. The nursing program can also be accredited through the CCNE, the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education. It doesn't have to be through the NLNAC.
