Any UCSF Mepn Applicants?

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hi everyone--

Has anyone else out there applied to the UCSF MEPN program? They're supposed to send out letters this month (December) for the interview process. Has anyone gotten a letter yet? Will those that aren't asked to the interview process get a rejection letter now?

Crossing my fingers...!

Me too!! I'm a finalist...First interview on the 19th, second on 23rd at the VA. Any ideas why the second interviews are somewhere else?

Hope to meet up with some of you at the Interview Day.

:balloons:CONGRATULATIONS!!!!:balloons:

That's so great, you guys. This definitely calls for a margarita. Or have you not taken your anatomy final yet, Nat3433? ;)

(Still no word for me here in Marin...grrrr....)

I forgot to ask before--does it say anything about the difference between the two interviews, or just that you have to do it? Does the letter say anything else interesting that you'd like to share?

(Living vicariously...) ;)

I just came back from the exam, and got the big envelope! It was a bi**h of an exam, and there were whole chunks of heart/lung anatomy I'd forgotten to study (it's not the kind of stuff you can fake really...!)

But UCSF only cares that you take the class, not the grade, which is nice.

Dordogne24; hope you hear something tomorrow. Who knew Marin was that much further away!

The first interview is all day, from 8-4pm. There's a whole program planned for the day, and then you meet with someone who talks about your specialty and "your readiness for the demands of a Master's Entry Program."

The second interview seems to be all about why you want to be a nurse. More details, the letter says, will come at interview number one!

Now I have to start stressing about what potential NPs wear to an interview!

Holy crap...8-4pm...no pressure there...hehe. I bet anything you'd feel comfortable wearing to a job interview would be fine.

OK, time for me to make some pizza--'night all, and congratulations again!!!

So here's what my letter says:

"As part of the screening process, you must attend two forty-five minute interviews the first of which will take place during the Interview Day on the UCSF campus. For each interview, you will meet with a single interviewer. One of the interviews will focus on why you have selected nursing as a career. The other will relate to your chosen specialty and your readiness for the demands of the Masters Entry Program....

...A program is planned for the day (January 19th)that will acquaint you with the UCSF campus, the School of Nursing, and the Masters Entry Program in Nursing".......

Hang in there -- Christmas can really screw up mail delivery, as you know. Breathe........breathe.........

Hi everyone,

For those of you that were invited to interviews, congratulations! That's so exciting.

So, I'm preparing to apply to the MEPN nurse-midwifery track for 2008, and had a couple questions. I read that UCSF doesn't care about your grades in the prereq. courses, only that you take them. Is that true? Also, what are some volunteer and work experiences you've had? Any creative things you've done to make your application stand out?

Thanks for the info!

Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth -

Good questions - not sure any applicant can answer.

My own thoughts have been that everything matters, and I absolutely worked my head off in the pre-reqs. In a competitive program, I have to assume grades mean something. (Of course, the person with the best grades would not necessarily make the best nurse - it's a balance.)

I also felt that a year of work (both paid and volunteer) in the area I'm interested in would ground my desire to train in reality. I volunteered at SF General and at St. Luke's.

Anyway, what do I know.........that's just how I thought about it.

Good luck - it's a long haul!

My thoughts on the pre-reqs and grades is that UCSF makes the final offer of a place on the program without ever requesting to see grades, and in some cases before people have even finished all their required classes. So I'm not sure other than taking the classes and passing them at the very least, that it can have much impact on the decision.

Interesting...So, when you turn in your official transcripts, you don't turn in transcripts from the schools at which you completed your prereqs?

I didn't turn in the transcripts because I had only just started the pre-reqs. I won't finish them all until May. All I did was mention the schools I was planning on taking them at, and the estimated completion date.
