Look on youtube, under "how to master ABG's", or really any of the videos that have a tic tac toe type diagram. It seems confusing at first, but if you follow along you will get it. Its ~~AWESOME~~ and once you have it down, you get to where you can just look at the values and do it in your head!

I learned ABGs best with ROME, respiratory opposite metabolic equal. pH up/CO2 down=respiratory issue, pH up/HCO3 up=metabolic issue and vice versa. Also, with compensation, pH off with 1 abnormal value=no compensation, pH off with 2 abnormal values=partial compensation, and pH within range with 2 abnormal values=compensation. The best way to learn them is to do them. Practice as many sets as you can find until you get it. Hope this helps!

First, decide the system that works best for you. Memorize the steps. Do a butt load of practice problems.

Respiratory Opposite Metabolic Equal= ROME........Respiratory has two arrows going in the opposite direction, Metabolic has arrows going in the same direction......Acidosis arrow goes down, Alkalosiis arrow goes up. If it is compensated the ph will be in normal range, uncompensated out of range. Sounds confusing but that's how I learned wish I could visually work one out and show you. ABG and FE reviews and rational book helped me to understand it.

I am a programmer turned RN and I wrote a little web application that lets you practice ABGs by randomly generating ten problems every time you refresh the page. When you click 'Check Answers' at the bottom it will grade your answers and provide rationales to help you learn. So here you go, have fun!
