Hello all,

Pretty soon, I will be precepting a LPN who is now an RN. The catch is she already works on our floor and she just passed her boards to become an RN. So she has the experience of a LPN already. I have six weeks to prepare her for the transition. So any tips/advice i can give to make it a good experience.

Thanks in advance:typing

I kept my same job when I transitioned from LPN to RN.

It helped me to understand that as an RN, my job would be less task oriented, and require more planning, interveaning, and supervising.

I did that but on a new unit. I liked that most of my preceptors let me do basic things (such as PO med passes, NG tube insertion) on my own and just watched me at first. We focused more on (ok the H & H came back low, what do you want to call the doctor & ask for? her urine out put has been substantial, what labs? more the critical thing/planning/ what consults should we get stuff. I appreciated that they didn't quiz me on the basics. But more the stuff that was going to get me to where I needed to be.

Also, ask her her weak areas, what she wants to focus on. etc. She's been in RN school and has some idea of the skills she'll need to have.

What a thoughtful co-worker you are! I didn't even get a repeat of orientation when I went from LPN to RN on the same floor. I'd definitely focus on the things she will be expected to do now as a RN that she didn't do as a LPN. Ask her about the tasks and skills she has been doing to get a good idea of what her competency level might be and struture her orientation based on her needs. Hopefully this will be a great experience for you both.
