Any Tips on Finding a Job as a new LPN????

Published

I am new LVN. I got my license on the 2nd of December prior to this, I had worked in healthcare as a nurse aide for 7years. During my years as an aide I worked in nursing homes, staffing agencies, acute care hospital and long term acute care hospitals. But apart from my experience during clinicals, I have no experience as a nurse. How do I snag a job as a new nurse with NO experience????:o

Well most nursing homes will hire anyone with a license and a pulse. All you have to do is search for which ones are hiring go fill out the application. Most places won't let you leave with out an on the spot interview. Hospitals usually make you fill out an online application and it can take weeks on end for recruiters to even call you, if they do at all. Try networking. If you know anybody that works in a hospital try to have them talk to the hiring manager about you. Can you apply at places you used to work at? That might help.

bring in your resume to every place you want to work whether you know they are hiring or not. When they need someone they have you on file anyway. Dress really well and make a good impression. Dont rely on adds in the paper-too much competion. Go in person, dont mail a resume. This is the advice I got for job hunting in general-not LPN in particular.

best of luck!!!

When I graduated in May 2008, I wondered the same thing, only I had only ever had experience in DENTAL assisting, not CNA, or anything like that, what I did was thought of all the clinics, hospitals, etc.. in my area and just started sending out my resume. I think I had sent out about 6 resumes, and within a WEEK I get 3 replies, and had a job within the month:D. I possibly just got lucky, but so many places are looking for nurses, I'm sure you won't have a problem, especially with your background!

Many hospitals in my area only accept applications for posted jobs, and you can only apply online. Start by searching the websites of hospitals in your area. Apply and upload your resume there. Then go to websites like Career Builder and Monster and look and apply there. Next, take copies of your resume and dress proffessionally, visit doctors offices and other facilities in your area that are independantly owned and dont have websites to apply on.

Keep track of who you apply too, contact numbers etc. Follow up by calling back if you dont hear anything after 7-10 days. Except if a company specifically states that they dont want phone calls.

Even if you get an interview with one or two places, dont forget to contact other places that you applied to. It's not over until you actually have a job.

For interviews...professionalism and punctuality are absolute neccesities.

If you use your cell phone as your contact number, make sure you dont have one of those ring-back tones and your voicemail message is simple and professional. You dont want to lose an opportunity because of something that causes the HR person to think you are still a kid.
