  1. I am a new LVN and I just got two jobs. One is on a med/surg floor in a LTAC hospital and the other is in a nursing home. Any tips on how to handle fellow nurses and CNAs as a new nurse on the job????
  2. I am new LVN. I got my license on the 2nd of December prior to this, I had worked in healthcare as a nurse aide for 7years. During my years as an aide I worked in nursing homes, staffing agencies, acute care hospital and long term acute care hospitals. But apart from my experience during clinicals, I have no experience as a nurse. How do I snag a job as a new nurse with NO experience????
  3. I was interviewed for a job at a nursing recently. After the normal routine questions in the interview with the DON (Director of Nursing), I was given an opportunity to ask questions. I asked who would be doing the initial assessments on their admissions to the facitlity and I was told that I would be doing them. I have no problem doing assessments but I need to know if this is right. In school we were taught that it is the RN that does the initial assessments and I do not want to put my license on the line by doing things that are not within my scope of practice.
  4. New LVNs earn between $18-$20 to start in houston. Through temp agencies and home health you can make anywhere $24/hr to $35/hr depending on the agency and the complexity of the cases you will be handling
  5. Just study the NET guide. You can also use study materials on the Victoria College website. The college has a campus in halletsville so you should check that against next year. I have a degree in English Language from Africa. But after begin out here a while, I have decided to change my field. There are so many opportunities in nursing and I want to take advantage of it. Well I hope they take you for the CNA program it helps you gain experience in healthcare.
  6. I am presently working two jobs. One is fulltime in a pediatric floor and the other is PRN at another hospital. I will be starting the LVN program next month and would appreciate some advise about my work situation. One fulltime job provides my medical benefits and my PRN job pays more hourly. Which should I choose and Why???
  7. I used to live in Northern California, Sanfrancisco to be exact. They pay pretty well. LPN's working in the County hospital earn between $27 and $30. I can safelly say that in the Bay Area of California they earn nothing less than $22 an hour base rate not including weekends and differentials. Right now, I live in houston, Texas. The pay here is not that good, it depends on where you work. Some places start out at $13/hr. Some agencies will go up to as much as $24/hr.
  8. Honey, when it comes to field like nursing, donot be ashamed or afraid of anything because someone else somewhere has gone through the same things or even worse. I had to repeat A&P for a better grade and I got a B in it. I have also decided to go the LPN route to nursing for personal reasons, because I have already take A&P1 and 2, I will have one class waived for me. The higher the grades you make on your prerequisites the better for you. You will be able to work as a CNA and go to school, that is what I am doing right now. I have talked to my manager about flexibility in scheduling and she is ready to work with me on it. Most employers try to support their employees ambition to further their studies expecially in the nursing field. In the hospital where I work, we have tuition reimbursement among our benefits. This goes along way to encourage us to further our education. Not all employers are like this. I have also had experiences with such employers and I had to quit. So dont let any employer get int the way of your education, its YOUR EDUCATION not theirs.
  9. You might be right.
  10. I am wondering how I am going to be able to manage my relationship while in nursing school. I am going to be very busy and I donot think that I will be able to give the relationship the attention it needs. I am seriously toying with the idea of breaking it up to concentrate on school. I love him but I dont think i can stand the distraction that my boyfriend can be sometimes. Can someone give me an idea on they coped being in a relationship or marriage while in nursing school??
  11. Thank You very much. I appreciate your encouragement.
  12. Hi, I was just accepted into the LVN program at Victoria College, TX. I am trying to contact nurses who graduated from this program or students still in the program. I am thrilled about being accepted and I feel it would be nice to network with students or nurses from the program for advice. Anybody willing to give a few words of wisdom??????
  13. Hey yall, I applied to HCCS,TVC, Wharton CC, San Jacinto C. I got accepted into TVC, Victoria VN program at the beginning of May, classes start in August. So I am counting down now. Has anybody else been accepted to TVC VN program???
  14. I am so glad for this thread. I am starting LPN school in August and I needed to have some encouragement. Thanks so much for starting this thread. I love nursing. I have worked as a CNA for five years, I finished all my prerequisites for the RN program but decided to start at the LPN route and then move on to RN. I enjoy working with my patients and people. I am glad for the opportunity to be in a field where the pay is better and the opportunities for growth are endless.
