Any student nurses find biology hard?

Published

I know that biology is like the core of all medical field related jobs. However, I was just curious. Do any nurses find biology hard/difficult? What do you find difficult? How do you overcome it? How do you study for this subject? I don't believe that it's all pure memorization like all my friends tell me... Any tips would help!!

PS: Sorry, I didn't specify, I meant Anatomy and Physiology.

Might wanna narrow it down here. Bio as in Microbio? Or Bio as in Anat/Physio? Or Bio as in that god awful movie Biodome?

I just finished all my biology prerequisites. I didn't find Anatomy and Physiology hard, I just found it very time consuming to learn and memorize different systems and parts of the body. I found Microbiology really fun compared to the other 2 core classes.

I remember when most of the students told me Microbiology was hard... it wasn't for me. I just applied myself to learn about the subject and made goals that would help me get an A in the class.

I remember everyone saying how hard biology was. When I took it I was terrified, and I think the fear made it harder. I passed biology, and went on to A&P 1 which everyone said was the hardest class ever, and thought biology was so easy. Then the same thing happened as I moved to A&P 2, and then microbiology etc. Its actually funny now when I look back. I remember some of the concepts I thought was so difficult in beginning are now ingrained my mind, and aren't so bad.

it really depends on the instructor as well. some make it very difficult as they seem to get a power trip out of it. i had 3 different instructors for ap 1, ap2, and micro and it took alot of work but i made it. i am path now and i have an awesome instructor and that makes it interesting instead of scary. good luck....everyone is just as confused as you. you are not alone, keep plugging along.:redpinkhe

Is Biology easy? NO, but compared to nursing classes it isn't hard either.

I am curious if you have started actual nursing courses yet because seriously, compared to them Biology (anatomy, physiology, micro, organic chemistry) is not that bad.

It is alot of material, so I do understand how it can quickly seem overwhelming. Just break it down and study a bit of it every day. Study every chance you get, while in line, while cooking dinner, etc.

It's not difficult. There's a difference in being conceptually difficult and just a lot of material in a short amount of time. Bio is a lot of memorizing info, the conepts aren't too difficult to understand. Maybe this is just my finding, but I think with effort it's not bad at all. Chemistry/Physics (espceically physics) is difficult and have found it's much less material to be learned, but the concepts are quite a bit more challenging.

Um, no... I'm not a nursing student. But I'd like to be!

I was concerned because I never really considered myself to be good with biology. And I haven't really studied biology since grade 11. I'm just afraid that once I start taking my pre-requisites, I won't be up to speed with all the other students are who are fresh out of high school.

uh yeah ! Nursing I seem to grasp better, but you'll do fine. It was just alot of pressure, because we had to get a B in all but one of the core science classes. Good luck.

i liked biology so it was easy enough for me to learn but psychology sociology i hated and still hate i think its so irrelevant. and to hear how nursing school is run in america im so jealous you know so much when you qualify i have the bare basics and i feel like an idiot in comparison!

Thank you for your positive attitude! I am struggling in BIOLOGY but maybe because I am carrying a full load, three kids, and full time job. BIOLOGY is probably better for me taking it alone for one semester. Besides, I don't want to mess up my GPA:)

I can tell you personally that I was afraid of my science prereqs. Last semester was my first full-time semester in 13 years, and I was taking A&P I and Microbiology together, which most people think is a bad idea, along with along with two other classes. I hadn't had any science classes since high school, and had never been particularly good at it.

What I found is that there are parts of those classes that are hard if you are not familiar with science, but alot of it is just memorization. I had to study pretty much every day. It was all so interesting to me, though, that I didn't mind all the studying I had to do. I ended up with all A's, which I never would have dreamed would happen. I am taking A&P II this semester and it is harder in some ways, and I think I will "only" end up with a B in this one, but I have one of the toughest professors at my school. The physiology is sometimes harder, because you don't just memorize - you have to actually understand what is going on. If you just go over the things you don't understand again and again, that will help. Get help, too, if you need it. Do your best to grasp theses classes, because like my A&P II professor says, the nursing classes are not going to be any easier.

Just so you know...I majored in Art and Psychology when I first went to college, so science is not my forte. If I can get an A in my first college-level sciences, I would think just about anyone can if they take the time to really study. I'm also a single mother of 3 year old twins, so if I can find the time to study....again, I would think almost anyone can.
