just curious to see how many of you guys are smokers? i've (very) recently stopped after about 12 or 13 years of filling my body with the many impurities cigarettes have to offer and it was just for mine and my girlfriends health. BUT i've expereinced first hand over the last eight years people dying horrible deaths due to smoking related diseases and it never put me off, and still never realy did - it was just that i was out of puff climbing the stairs and thought " thats not right!!". so, how many of you guys are the same?????? still smoking / recently stopped / stopped since nursing??

I am happy for all the quiters and do understand those who like me have tried to quit but was not sucessful. I quit once for a year when I was a bartender. One night I was so stressed out by my drunk patrons I lit one up thinking I would only smoke this one. The next morning I was at the local & Eleven buying a pack. Never did get over not wanting one. I only wish the tobacco I perfer to smoke was legal.

let me give you a personal experience my husband has moked for over 50 years he has ended up with copd, chf the works sunday morning he went into respiratory arrest while in the hospital and ended up on a vent i saw them intubate him not a pretty sight yes this is enough to make me quit smoking when it is someone who is the love of your life goes bad this way you are completely helpless and working hard at quitting smoking right now want to be totally smoke free when he comes out of the hospital with gods help i will succeed

I have smoked on and off throughout my adult life. Quit for up to seven years at a time. It's not that quitting is hard for me but I work on an oncology floor and I see patients that have quit for 10-15 years and suddenly are diagnosed with lung cancer. They tell me how they have been told that after quitting that their lungs were supposed to heal and now they have lung cancer. If someone could guarantee that I would not get lung cancer if I quit today I would do it in a heartbeat. The rebellious side of me says if I am going to get lung cancer might as well enjoy the trip.

Enjoy the trip? I hope you're traveling alone and not planning on being a burden to anyone.

I absolutely do not plan on being a burden to anyone. The complications I may incur will be the result of my own actions and I will be the one to deal with them. I hope none of your choices or actions in life will be a burden on anybody else either. Hopefully you will not get old or develop dementia and need care from someone.

Another ex smoker here. This year will mark my ten year anniversary of quitting tobacco after smoking for fifteen years. I regretted my choice to start smoking, but have never regretted the decision to quit.

what are you, 12? you may not plan to burden anyone, but unless you are a complete hermit that has no friends, family and are completely self sufficient and wont need any government aid or anything, then you are gonna burden folk. the only thing is, they wont see it as a burden cause they'll love you and do anything for you.. i'm not saying that it isn't up to you or its not your "right" to smoke or anything, but at least appeciate the consequences associated.... no? maybe i'm being a total nutter!!!???

You are still a young thing. 52 is not old

I am taking my pre-reqs to get into nursing school, I'm chewed smokeless tobacco daily from age 15 to 27, I quit three months ago when I turned 28. I am afraid of cancer and I don't want to burden my wife with a disgusting habit, or have cravings while at work.

Alcohol magnifies nicotine addiction so if you are serious about quitting I'd recommend avoiding alcohol. I had painful withdrawls for a couple of weeks including horrible irritability, headaches, increased thirst and hunger. It gets easier over time and is possible if you are serious. I highly recommend it, as a bonus I figured I spend about $550 a year on the stuff so save some money too.

I totally appreciate the consequences.

As for being 12.....I think your personal attacks and strident attitude are much more in line with a 12 year old mentality.

i agree with the outright banning of smoking

i'm not saying that it isn't up to you or its not your "right" to smoke or anything

I find contradiction in these two statements. Dont ask people if they are 12 if your opinions are going to differ from day to day. To say they dont differ would mean that you think you could be the authority who decides which "rights" should be taken away. Surely not!
