Hello, I am wondering if there are any RN's out there, that work for the state as a surveyor and if you like your job? Can you tell me a little about your job? I have 20 yrs. of nursing experience as a LPN and RN mainly in LTC. Two years ago I began working with the state in our local VA nursing home, and looking to eventually change pathways, within the state. The state retirement benefits are GREAT!!! Thanks in advance.

How do you become a nurse surveyor? I live in Florida and would love to get more information.

Are you still a nurse surveyor? I have applied for a position in the West Texas area and was just curious about the training. I know that it will mostly be in Houston or San Antonio, as the lady that called me told me, but I guess I just had a few questions. Thanks!

I am wondering if anyone can give advice as to how to get my foot in door for nurse surveyor?

Good morning,

I am wondering if you can give me some advice as to how to get my foot door for state surveying? I live in Iowa and I am licensed in both Iowa and Pennsylvania. I have 20 + years of home care experience and recently have been in ER case management position for year and half. Currently, I am a Program Director for a Senior IOP program. Can you give me some advise?

Check your state's employment listings, and apply for any open surveyor positions in your area of expertise. That's all I did. In my experience, there's nothing special about "getting your foot in the door." I and the people I worked with just applied for open positions and got hired.

How long is the training for LTC Surveyor?

How long is the training for LTC Surveyor?

It's six to nine months of very intensive training, and then you have to go to Baltimore for what's called Federal Boot Camp so you can be certified at the federal level. I heard that it generally takes a couple of years to feel competent in the role of surveyor; I never made it that far, but washed out of training after a few months. It's tough going under the best of circumstances; unfortunately for me it was at a time when my husband was newly diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and I was way too easily distracted from work. To this day I don't regret not finishing with the training because I was able to be with my husband during his final season of life, although I didn't see it that way right after I was let go.

Just accepted a position with the State of Maryland as a Nurse Surveyor. I will be in LTC. I was told that the LTC had the least amount of travel however after reading this I'm not so sure. Working as a public health nurse in Baltimore County now. Also have 13 years experience in the hospital setting. Will it be a shell shock? And what is the training like?

Hi, I'm considering a State Surveyor position. I'm curious if anyone has insight as to the career growth as a surveyor and/or other opportunities that could open up from having experience in this role? Also, can you work in different units as a surveyor? Thanks
