Hello,
I realize that I am putting the cart before the horse here and I certaintly do not mean to cause panic but I would like to know if anyone else is concerned about getting hired once graduated? I have been reading and it seems like getting hired as a new grad can be difficult. Has anyone else heard something similar? I live in metro Atlanta and am planning on starting an ADN program in the fall of 2011 (if I get in).
Thanks a bunch for your input!

I also live in Atlanta. I go to Ga State (in their ACE program) and am graduating in December. I personally am not worried seeing as how I joined the Navy so....no actual job hunting for me for at least 4 years if ever. My classmates in my program are starting to really feel the stress though. Virtually all of the hospitals here only take new grad anythings once...maybe twice...a year. Seems a number start in March. I want to say Piedmont is about that time as is Grady. CHoA is a once a year place as well...so I've heard. I suggest making friends with the nurses/charges/managers wherever you have clinical. That seems to have really helped people out in my class.

If any of the following apply ...
1. No summer externship
2. No previous health field related work (CNA, EMT)
3. No connections (church members
You should be "worried" ...

I had a summer externship so I'm less worried than I was in my first year. I've been looking at it this way - no matter WHAT kind of degree or training you invest in, jobs are scarce these days. But I think I have a better chance of finding a job and loving that job if I'm nurse rather than anything else. I graduate in May 2011 but in your case, you don't have to worry about this until 2013 (when the job market may be much better than it is today, it always changes)

My last clinical instructor was DON of the hospital where we were completing our clinical. She let us know up front that she had hired previous students and that she was currently looking to hire again. Utilize your clinical instructors if you can to get a foot in the door. Most of the time, they want to help us students become as successful as they are!

I am in a highly saturated market and I can't move. So yes, I'm worried. We'll see!

Im in my 1st year of school and I am already concerned as Im well aware that new grads are having an impossible time finding jobs in NY. I plan on trying to get a CNA job over the summer since by then Ill have that license but Im hearing that prob wont make all that much an impression when looking for a job. Im SCARED! I HAVE TO get a job immediately following school, I cant afford not to as Im a single parent with a child to support. I wish our economy would get better soon but I think its going to be more than 2 years from now until it does, unfortunately.

Am I worried about getting a job after graduation? In a word, YES!!!!!!!!!
But, I've decided to look at it this way, once I have my degree and licensure in my hands, so to speak, I'll be employable in a number of areas. The thing is, I have to be open to different areas of work. Would I love to be able to work in a certain setting, sure, but would I take a job in another setting, yes. The electric company won't care if I work in LTC, a hospital, or in a doctor's office. There is always somewhere else to apply. And, if need be, I guess I could move for a position.
But, like the others have said, finding a job, any job, in this economy is hard enough, let alone with a job market that is as saturated as nursing.
And they told us there was a shortage... Wrong!
