Any one else over 40 that went to nursing school?

I am over 40 and aplying to nursing school. Any advice from current or former older students would be greatly appreciated!!:redbeathe

I graduated from school with a woman that was 67 and another that was 55. They ran circles around everyone. They said they would probably croak before they paid off the student loans. :chuckle

While I am not over 40, I am 35, so close enough, right?! Going from accounting field to nursing is a welcome change for me. I couldn't have handled nursing school in my twenties, I had too many things to do and people to see!:smokin: Now that I am a little older and wiser and have a child to support, I am much more confident I can handle whatever comes my way! I'm actually paying for my education now, so I know I HAVE to do well!

We've had enough life experiences to realize there are harder things in life than nursing school, right;)? I've been through a terrible, terrible divorce:angryfire, had a child born 16 weeks premature:crying2:, and a whole host of other things. So, I'm trying to look at it like nursing school is NOTHING compared to what I've already endured! I realize I haven't started yet, but this is how I am going to think of it!

I am 29 and going back to school to get a nursing degree hopefully. I am also a mom to a preemie born at 27 weeks. My experience with him is what made me want to be a nurse. The nurses while he was in the NICU were so helpful to me. I took school for granted and goofed up early in my college career and managed to turn it around when I returned to finish my original bachelor degree. I managed to do it with a special needs child and a tumultuous marriage, now I am returning to school with 2 kids while working full time still.

Honey I am 57 (will turn 58 this October of 2010) and I am getting ready to start LPN school and then I want to get my RN!!! I am so excited to finally be doing this. As long as you have the desire, you can do it!

It was nice to read your post RoseofKY! I will be 51 this October and will be starting the LPN program then. I stressed over the age thing for about a year. I think that I'm over it though!

Consider the following: Whether you go to school at age 40 or you don't, you will still be 40. That's what's keeping me optimistic about starting this new career myself. If I start now I will be 44 when I finish. If I don't start I will be 44. What is the difference? Knowledge, accomplishment, new career, and 2 years of life spent doing something rather than wondering and self-doubting. Not the age because that remains the same.

You go for yours girl. I was 42 when I started now I am a happy LPN with a job I wouldn't trade for nothing. I think being older gives us ladies a geater advantage. WE are more mellow foused and understand what we need to do to get the job done. CONGRATS to you gurl....you can do it all night long.......lol....Us older gals are here for you if u need us.....

Honestly, you should be proud of yourself. You have something on everyone else there, years of experience, wisdom, and a wealth of knowledge that will carry you through all of the discouraging and doubtful times. People like you, working mothers, and the like inspire me every day to succeed!

Just got acceptance into LPN school for this fall. I have sons 26, 16, and almost 8. Yesterday, I turned 48. You'll be fine!:coollook:

I completed my BSN at University of Louisville when I was 41 years old. I am now in grad school for health informatics. I did very well at UofL. It's all about priorities and determination. I did whatever it took to succeed. Some of my younger classmates didn't have the same priorities. It's not always the smartest who is successful, but the person who refuses to quit. You can do anything if you believe it!!!!!

I am a 40+ PreBSN student. My application for WKU Fall 2012 is in and waiting to hear the news, unfortunely won't be until Feb or Mar 2012!! It's nice to hear that there are other people out there getting a new start late in life. All the students I have seen are young enough to be my Children!!

Good luck! WKU is a good school. Most of my classmates are 25+ but there are about 10 of us over 40. We share notes, procedures, and try to take care of one another. It does seem weird that a good portion of my class is old enough to be my kid! But I try to look at it as I can learn from them, they can learn from me. You will love (and hate at times) nursing school. It is the best thing I have ever done for myself. Let me know how you are doing since we are neighbors across the state. I'm in Lexington. :)
