Any new grads work for Visiting Nurse Services of NY?

I am considering working for them, since they take new grads. But I hear they require you to sign a long term contract, of a couple yrs. I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing.

I also would like know if working for home care services will provide enough experience for a new grad.

At the moment, this is my only option.

Well sorry if I can't give you much advice but I will try. My mother is a Case Manager for a home health agency in Brooklyn but not VN. She has adviced that it is not best for a new grad to do this kind of work only because they would need experience. She feels that as a new grad you should start in the hospitals because you will learn more. These agencies do hire new grads but you are on your own. You must know what you are doing and her agency requires the nurse to do a lot of paperwork. Good luck in your choice.

I know Visiting Nurse Services of New York takes new grad into their internship program where you're train for a whole year with an preceptor. They will NOT let you go on you own until you're fully competence as a home care nurse. I have a few classmates that only want to do home care and not hospital and they're now employed by VNSNY. The internship starts on April and September of each year and you've to sign a contract of 2 years if you accepted their internship program. Not everybody like to do home care, so if you've never done home care before, I suggest you "shadow" for a day and see if you like it or not. I personally did home care with VNSNY during my community nursing clinical and I found the experience to be not so great. Then again, I prefer working in a hospital setting.

I was just hired into the BSN internship program at VNSNY and I absolutely love it; I wouldnt trade it for anything. As the previous post mentioned VNSNY trains you as a new grad before you are allowed to make patient visits on your own. They have many supportive systems in place for new grads and really hold your hand until you feel you are ready. Homecare isn't for everyone; you have to want to and love to manage patient cases on your own, visit patients in their home, manage pt care from beginning to end, and COORDINATE,COORDINATE, COORDINATE pts care with other disciplines within and outside of VNS. Just like anything you do in life there first has to be that strong desire. You have nurses who want a change and just go into homecare just to "try it out"; those are the ones who ususally dont last. So it depends what your looking for and your reasons your preference for one setting over another; I'm biase to home care and knew immediately, I would not prefer to ever work in a hospital setting.

I am so glad this works out for you. The agency my mother works for throws you in. However, I totally agree that you have to want to manage your patients.

My mother works for the VNSNY and loves it too. She got into it after spending 3 full years in long term care so she had to re-learn some things but she says there is nothing like it!! It's so much more laid back than a floor nurse and you can organize your schedule so that you can be finished with work some days by noon! Good luck I think you'll love it too.

Do you know if they require nurses to be IV certiified, or do the provide training for that?

can you tell me what your typical day is like? how's the paperwork? wha t time are you usually home? do yu have to chart off hours alot? do you have to take the train to different stops alot? thanks so much for your help

I am looking to the 9 month internship for april 2010 but i am also applying to sunydownstate rn-bsn program which starts august 2010. Do you think the vns allows for flexibility in regards to classes with interns?

Hi RN angels..I actually missed the deadline for application for the vn program for september. I am so excited to apply for april as I am also not sure if the hospital setting is the right choice for me. I absolutely love the internship schedule as it is mon to fri from 9-5 and one wkn every thee months. I currently have as AS in nursing to you need your BSN for consideration? andd how was the application process?
