Any new nursing grads thinking of moving to Los Angeles/recently relocate there?

I currently live in New York and graduated nursing school this past may/take NCLEX in August and would love to chat with anyone thinking of relocating to LA as a new nurse.

Okay thanks! Is there a particular place to look for the new grad openings or you just apply for the regular RN openings? Because I looked at OR openings and it said "clinical nurse 2" in the description so I wasn't sure if that meant they were looking for experienced nurses. Btw sorry for all my questions but do you know any other hospitals in the southern Cali area that have new grad programs? Thanks!

No worries. You're going to just have to keep checking their website around March to see when they will post the job opening. Its not Clinical Nurse 2...it will be a specific posting like New Grad Residency or OR Training Program or something like that. From what I know USC, CHLA, CHOC, Cedars Sinai, SHARP, and Loma Linda offer new grad programs. Sometimes if you check Indeed.com and search New Grad Rn you can find some new grad residencies as well...mostly from community hospitals.

Thank you! Also do you know which documents they want us to send by mail and which to upload? I know you mentioned the fingerprints can be sent by mail. What about the transcript? Because I had paid for my original copy of my transcript back in August I just didn't have the school send it out I brought it home with me but I wasn't sure if they needed the school itself to send it to them. Also, if the application deadline is in March/April when is the start date of the program? Thank you!

Transcript needs to be sent directly by your school to the CA Board of Nursing along with one of the pages of the application. What I had to do print out whatever page of the application (I think it was 13 or 14) fill it out, scan it, and then email it to my nursing school & ask them to send it along with the transcript to the CA Board of Nursing. The UCLA program would probably start August/September

I took the NCLEX in Nebraska and transferred my license over to CA last summer. It took about 6 months for my license to transfer, and for others I know it's taken longer. After I obtained my CA RN license, it took another 5 months for me to get a job. In Southern CA, there's a LOT of competition for jobs between new grads. Few hospitals hire new grads, and those that do typically hire ones that had clinicals in their facility. Luckily, my parents were able to support me through this time, but without that kind of support, I can't imagine how one would survive. Northern CA is desperately low on nurses, so getting a job up there isn't as big of an issue.

If you're planning to move to Southern CA, especially LA and the surrounding counties, I would HIGHLY recommend working in your state while you wait for your license to transfer, and then moving after having a year of work experience. Then you should have no problem finding a job. Best of luck to you! I hope this all makes sense! I just got off my third night and am feeling a little loopy ;)

Oh okay. Because back in August I went to the registrar at my university and they filled out that page for me stamped and signed it but I wasn't sure if they had to send it or I was supposed to send it so I just asked for an official copy of the transcript and they gave me that page signed so I'm wondering do I have to go there again so they can just send it or have to pay for a whole new transcript?

You probably can use that one and just drop it off to your school and have them send it verse paying for a whole new one.

Hey girl. How was your interview?!

Hey! Wasn't my best lol. They were super nice though, I just think my nerves got the best of me and I didn't articulate myself well. We haven't received final decisions yet though...probably sometime between end of December/January. I doubt I got the job but think I will try again for the summer residency.

awww it's okay!!! Keep applying you'll get a job there for sure!! I'm gonna apply to the OR residency too when it opens in March. Are you gonna Work in New York as an RN in the meantime?

Yeah- I have been really slacking with looking/applying for RN jobs around here though. I'm still waiting to hear back in regards to another OR position at a hospital in NY but its literally been 2 months since the interview and they just keep emailing that they haven't made any final decisions yet/still under consideration so its not very promising. I think what my plan will be is to get any type of RN job, here so I have some relevant experience under my belt/doesn't look like I have been doing nothing for months and then apply again in March or whenever they post the application.
