Any Navy Hospital Corpsman out there?

I was just wondering if any Navy Hospital Corpsman were on this site. I just got out of the Navy and have passed my NCLEX-PN exam. I would love to talk to any current or former HMs that have passed their test, and what they are up now.

Hi, I don't want to interrup your thread, but I'm new at this. I'm looking for information on what states will accept an HM3 to take the NCLEX-PN. TN,GA have said they will not acknowledge and of the military training associated with navy corpsman. My son is a reservist, went thru hospital corps school at Great Lakes and then FMF at Camp Johnson...now everyone tells him that training doesn't count with them he needs a 'civilian' certification. He, his sister and I are trying to research states that will acknowledge his training and find out if he can bring it back to GA and work and he's waiting for a deployment.

Thanks,

Wife and mother of Hospital Corpsmen

California may still allow HM's to challenge the PN boards. Check there website.

Hi,

Thanks so much for the info. Last night my son came home from taekwondo to say he has an interview with a Physician's Assistant to work in her office. We are praying that this is a step. I'll read further thru the blogs. Thank you for your forum.

Hm3 means nothing in the civilian world. you must have civilian degrees or certificates to get ant decent job. Even as aHMC I had to start all over. I know the Army will convert medics to LPN's . Good luck .

Harleyhead is correct HM means little or nothing in the civilian sector. I retired an HSC (Coast Guard equivalent to HMC) and would only qualify as little more than a Patient Care Tech at any hospital in this area. I finished nursing school 2 months before retirement and being an RN along with my military experience has opened doors for me.

Thanks for all the info.

N. is now working under a physician's assistant's license at her office. She knows the training he's had and is willing to have him work under her license...but of course, he still needs to finish his nursing degree. I've been thinking of contacting our state representative and congressman to see what can be done in GA to accept military training and experience so they can take the boards.

We need to make a way for our warrior's to bring their excellent military training and experience home after their military duty.

Hi everyone,

I also was a Corpsman- class 82-005!That was 1982 and I was active duty from 81-85.It took me awhile but in 1988 I challenged the LPT board in CA and passed first try.I worked for many years as a CNA and LPT then got tired of psych and took the LVN exam and passed this too-2003!I then went the Excelsior College route and finally at 46 years of age I got my ASN and just passed the NCLEX-RN too!!.I am so pleased and am thankful to the many folks who have helped me and inspired me along the way and especially to the Navy for teaching me the right way of doing things.I am open to making new friends here in San Diego,Calif-any corpsman out there who want to communicate and help further education-I am considering doing my BSN.Am also open to helping others with Excelsior questions/advice.Such a great site-I am glad I joined.Later Robert

Can you tell me what Excelsior requires from us? I'm an Army Medic, and really want to become a nurse. The nursing program we have would require me to be a SGT, and I am a SSG. I used to be Marine Infantry from 1987 - 2000, and in my experiences the Navy Corpsman will always be the best in my book. I became a medic because I have always admired you guys. I tried to go Navy, but the recruiter could not promise me Corpsman only Boatswains Mate, so I went to the Army instead. I have worked with Corpsman in Iraq and there is still that level of professionalism that I have always remembered. So thanks for being Doc!!! :yeah:

Does anyone out there know of what states where corpsman are able to challenge the lpn board? Please help me as I am getting ready to seperate from the military and need a job soon. Thanks a lot!!

I know that California does. Check the Board of Nursing in the state you are going to reside.

I am stationed in Pittsburgh ansd had the opportunity to go to school at night and weekends and just got my ADN, and got a job now where I work 3 days a week as a graduate nurse I will be taking my board soon to be a RN. I'm glad that other HM's are on this site.

Congrats!!! I am impressed that you did it while on active duty. I did the same and it was not easy!!!!!! Are you going to stay in, try to become an officer, or get out.

I was an 8404 Corpsman for 13 years and got the boot after an accident I sustained in K-Bay. I was definately not ready to become a civilian so quickly. I tried to challenge the NCLEX-LPN here in NY, but found out the hard way that NY state doesn't recognize the Navy Corpsman Program as adequate education for an LPN.

For any Corpsman out there from NY State looking to broaden their horizons, make sure you look into your NYS Veterans education benefits. If you have done time in the Gulf you are eligible for 98% college tuition at any SUNY school or you may go to any school and receive the tuition equivilant to the SUNY tuition. I will be attending college this January in a 2 year RN program and pocketing my GI Bill as NY State pays my way.
