Any Muslim Nurses/Student Nurses in Allnurses?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi,

I'm muslim pre-nursing student and I wear the hijaab. I would love to know any Muslim nurses/student nurses that I can ask some questions regarding the hijaab, uniform, dealing with patients, and going through nursing school as a muslim.

There are a few specific questions I would love to ask.

So come out! :)

Vincy here

its nice to meet other Muslim nurses from around the world i from Australia

it's nice to know that there are nurses who wear the headscarf as part of their uniform. some people here take it off to go to work because they feel it will affect interaction with people.

i don't get it, as long as you're a confident, happy, hardworking nurse i don't think the world wouldn't care if you were blue and furry.

totally agree, why should it have any bearing on how you interact at work. if anything hopefully it will be a means to break down barriers.

Peace,

I would like to hear how you muslim sisters are coping with fasting and working 12 hr shift. For me, it sucks because I work night shift from 8p-830a. I leave home just when we are breaking the fasting. So I worked the first 2 wks of ramadan and took a vac for the rest of the time. HAPPY RAMADAN!!!

assalmualkium, peace be with you all,

I'm Muslim, and in my final year of nursing school. I wear uniform/scrub pants and a long (length) uniform top with a long sleeve shirt underneath. I wear a white cotton surgical hat. I find the full hijab too hot. Most of the patients do not even know I'm Muslim. Its funny that other Muslim healthcare workers or Muslim patients seem to figure it out. My 2nd patient ever was a priest who asked why did I wear a surgical hat, once I explained he was very understanding.

Do any of the nurses who wear hijab work in the Orange County area? I was wondering if certain states/areas are more accepting than others? Would this be something that you would bring up in an interview or ask if the hospital has an issue with one's hijab? Am a new grad and confused as to how to approach the matter.

Those of you who said you wear surgical hats...can you pls offer any web sites where those can be ordered or I can check them out?

Thank you

I would not bring up religion in the interview, and they are not allowed to ask. If you normally wear hijab, I would wear it, if not don't. If you think that it may bias them, then don't wear it. On the 1st day of work, I would cover my hair with hijab, or whatever. If something is said, I would tell them. I would make sure my head covering is the same color as my uniform. If you have to wear white, make sure you wear white head covering. Here is the link to the surgical caps. I've tried several brands, but like the size of this one the best.

I am a Muslim student nurse, I wear hijab, I just wear either a hijab that I can tuck into my scrub top, I also wear a long sleeve tee shirt, some of my scrub tops I have made myself to that they are long enough, I usually do not have any problems with other student or administrators, I am not sure how I will be received when I do my clinical rotations though, when i worked at the same hospital as a pharmacy tech, I had no problem when I wore my hijab, so i think it will be ok, inshallah
