Any Muslim Nurses/Student Nurses in Allnurses?

Nurses General Nursing

Hi,

I'm muslim pre-nursing student and I wear the hijaab. I would love to know any Muslim nurses/student nurses that I can ask some questions regarding the hijaab, uniform, dealing with patients, and going through nursing school as a muslim.

There are a few specific questions I would love to ask.

So come out! :)

I never had any problems wearing a hijab in Houston. I usually wear a warmer jacket on top of my scrubs and a short one piece or two piece tucked under the jacket. I asked Imam Yaser Kadhi and he said that was OK.

I have heard disposable sleeves are available that some female surgeons are wearing but I have not come across them. I have seen some nurses, students and other healthcare workers wear cute scarves over their uniforms and here in a big city with a large Muslim population, it is OK.

I personally usually wear a white scarf over any color of uniform, or match a solid color. I would also go with hospital policy if your hospital wants your scarf to be of one color or shape.

I would be very careful in wearing bulky or long clothes that hang in the hospital setting as it is an infection control issue. We nurses have to lean over beds and get into the personal spaces of patients and we do not want to carry organisms from bed to bed or take them home to our families. The same goes for skirts. Skirts are not an infection control issue if they are above the ankle. However, if worn long and down to the ankle, they are more likely to come in contact with contamination/shoes/floors/spill. Things you don't want on your clothes. I wear pants with the longest shirts/warmers available.

I hope this will help.

I would never ever make the hijab an issue in the interview. When you bring it up in an interview, you are saying it is an issue (while it should be a normal thing people need to get over). I would just wear it to the interview and look very professional.

Once you are hired, you have rights of accommodation and your employer knows it.

salaamu alaikum, hello

personally I dont see HOW hejab or any form of religious attire would cause a problem anyway. Ive worked for a long time and always worn hejab and even I had one job and wore abaya and hejab and its never been a problem, especially if you have the credentials and act professionally...I'm also a Librarian and have worked in a busy, urban public library and I'm quite adept at "handling" people in a tactful manner...hehehehe.

Another perk is, esp in my city...the medical field is pretty much full of Muslims anyway-between the medical school and huge University hospital complexes...I should be good. hehehe.

Right now im focusing on studying for the PSB...pls say doa'a for me!:yeah:

salam alaykum sister, i went to phlebotomy school a few months ago with hijab on , and they allowed me to wear hijab it was a rule in their student hand book that you can wear just not baseball caps or bandanas that are offensive and not professonal... and im pretty sure that they will allow me to wear it during my extern and where i will be working at.... and beisdes your hair has to be put up as a dress code rule. and hospitals should allow muslim woman to wear hijab any way .. wearing surgery cap is a head covering too

i wear amira hijab for phlebotomy because it is quick to put on and it doesnt get in the way or come un- done when i Draw blood :)

Ma salam ;)

Assalamu alaykum wa ramatullah wa barakatu Muslim nurses :D

I do not yet wear the hijab but I plan to insha'Allah.

Where I go to school there is 1 other Muslimah and she is a hijabi. She seems to not have any problems, but she's a very nice and polite girl masha allah :)

But in regards to hijab and uniform: I have seen a lot of Muslimahs wear like...extravagant scarves and I really think thats a bit unnecessary. IF I do make it to a LPN or RN level insha Allah, I'd wear an al-amira or a square scarf with a single pin underneath in a matching solid color. Not a lot of fancy penwork, not a loud scarf...Try to remain modest & professional.

Also, someone posted this link earlier: http://www.scrubs.com/Mega-Scrub-Cap-Collection-s/101.htm

I think those are SOOOO cute and modest :-)

I am active on this site, even if i dont post a lot. I like to "lurk"

Please feel free to send me a message and we can chat about our experiences XD

hello and salaamu alaikum,

well, I've finally starting my nursing program and I havent experienced any "issues" where my faith came up as a source of contention. I doubt it will.

But, as re what Francis said...I wanted to add that Ive never seen any Muhajabaat (covering) in islamic attire) nurses or doctors wearing extravagant scarves, and my city has a huge Muslim population and in every singloe hospital and program there are large numbers of Muslims, and quite a few cover (alhamdullah)..I dont see how one could...one a pin in your hejab is a hazard, even the "hejab pins" which are pretty safe...what is your leaning over a patient, putting in an IV and ur pin comes out? Serious hazard! Every single nurse and doctor I have seen wears the stretchy kind or the irani maghneh kind or just a square tied under the chin and tucked into their scrub top/dress/lab coat. If I saw a hejabi working as a nurse and ON SHIFT wearing a scarf with a lot of pins or potential hazards...I'd be the first to be like...um, no! You better check that! Thats unsafe! Also what if your patient grabs on to you, because they are disoriented...ouch! Its just NOT safe!

About the mega scrub caps...those are really not suitable for a covering Muslim woman-like who wears hejab because the purpose of hejab is to cover not just the hair but also the body and that includes the neck and ears...so like your headscarf for it to fullfill the purpose of hejab is to cover the hair, neck, ears and preferably chest-although when on the floor and in your scrubs your scarf cant, it has to be tucked in, but still. So those may be good for orthodox Jewish women or women who just for whatever reason solely cover their hair...but for a muhajabaat...nope. sorry! I dont mean to rain on your parade..

Allahu alim (God knows best).

Anyway, best of luck with your program, en'shallah you can succeed in the Nursing school!

Well, regarding the surgical cap, for one like myself who is considering taking that step to wearing hijab it's better than not covering at all.

Besides, all that can easily be handled by wearing a turtleneck under the scrub top. And in the pics they had their ears tucked in, by the way.
