Was wondering if any LPN's have went back to school for RN? I work during the day , full time and have been checking out different schools. Its discouraging when you read bad reviews on a school. Can anyone recommend a good online program--either for associates degree or bachelors? Anyone know anything about The College Network or Excelsior college? Thanks!!

The college network is NOT A SCHOOL. they are a publishing company NOT affiliated/endorsed with Excelsior. Currently the college network is under investigation by the FTC and the Indiana Attorney General and the subject of an Ohio based class action law suit.

Excelsior is not accepted in all states for direct licensure. Not at all in CA. You need to be a motivated independent learner with strong clinical skills for Excelsior. There is a forum for Excelsior on allnurses.

Read this thread regarding the college network, knowledge is power.

I earned my RN licensure in 2010 after having worked as an LPN/LVN for four years. I worked 16-hour weekend double shifts every Saturday and Sunday so I could be off during the week to attend school.

If you want it badly enough, you might need to find a flexible weekend job. I attended a classroom-based program because the online programs have too many licensing restrictions placed on them by multiple boards of nursing around the country. In addition, they are not accepted at all in my home state of California.

I am pretty happy in my niche and with no tuition reimbursement and only a few years until I can retire I am not planning on it. I would advise anyone to skip right over the associates degree and most distance learning as well (I'm sure some folks will disagree but I need the structure of a classroom) In this area an associates degree would not open any doors to me that are not open to me now.

I am a big believer in higher education but I would encourage anyone to master your current position/field before you consider pursuing another one with even more responsibility. I have worked with cna's who cut corners, neglected residents and lied like rugs to get out of trouble go on to become nurses and within a year were out of the job on their hind ends. You can't cut corners and lie as a nurse and get away with it for long. You need integrity.

I have worked with a good number of LPN's totally lacking common sense, most of them were fresh out of school and talking about going on. Meanwhile they could not even master a med pass, their nurse's notes were like hieroglyphics and forget calling a physician (SBAR? what's that?) Tip of the day- If you are in tears on a regular basis on the floor in LTC,IMHO you have NO business trying to go back to school. Especially if you don't know the difference between a hgb and a hgb1c. Or a normal dilantin level vs digoxin level. Or the difference between Vicodin and Percocet (which led to a huge CF when it came time to call the doc for a new script)

If The College Network has lawsuits filed against them, then is there any other online nursing program someone could recommend for LPN to RN?

The college network is not a program but a publishing company.

The two big options are Indiana State LPN to BSN or Excelsior LPN to ASN. Neither is accepted in every state

I was an LPN/LVN and went to a local CC for my ADN. My friend went to Excelsior, made it through the entire program, and failed the final practicum three times and gave up. I still worked full time, mostly on weekends and 1 weekday, but I made it work. Now I'm almost finished with my BSN and have been accepted into an NP program. You can do it! But I personally advise against Excelsior.

I went back to school and went through an accelerated generic BSN program that met twice a week in the evenings and clincials were done on the weekend; I maintained my job as a LPN at a medical day care, working 30+ hours/week with no weekends.

Check you area to see if they have evening/weekend programs; if you need pre req's check to see of you can do a few (not the science courses) online and pace yourself that way.

I did most of my pre-req's in the classroom setting, but the rest I did online; I once went on vacation in Hawaii and was able to take my laptop and finished what I needed for the week deadline and enjoyed my vacation; that's the beauty of doing online courses. ;) I found online courses to be just as intensive as classroom courses, but was able to handle the course load and make it work; it is up to the person in terms of whether they can handle online coursework: you have put in the effort to get a good-excellent grade.
