Hi all!
I'm new to the allnurses.com site and am so impressed at the wealth of information available on here. Kudos to everyone who participates and posts- sharing your knowledge is so valuable, especially to newbies like me! So, I wanted to start a roll call for Jan 2010 UIC GEP applicants on here.
Yes, it may be a little early considering applications aren't due until March 2009, but I'm super excited (and terrified). I'd love the opportunity to commiserate with some fellow students over the intimidating application process. I just started studying for the GRE and am feeling like I need to go back to the second grade to re-learn basic math!! Did anyone else have this same experience?
I'm 26, work full time in a completely non-health care field, graduated with a degree in Philosophy and pre-med emphasis (don't worry, I came to my senses right out of college and decided med school is not the most effective way (for me) to make a difference!). Most of my pre-reqs are done, except for A&P II and the Research Methods course. I'm having trouble getting letters of reccommendation, shadowing a NP, and studying the GRE (test anxiety...yuck!). Hope to hear from you guys!
I had my interview for the CNM specialty this morning. I felt it went really well. The interviewer was extremely nice and helpful, and I thought the questions were pretty straight forward.
The interviewer said that they would send out decisions in early May, but online and at the information session they said decisions would be sent out in mid-April. Has anyone else been told when we should find out of the admissions decisions?
rnewhouse1, how was your interview??
Good luck to everyone who has interviews coming up!
The interviewer had a sheet which had around 5 questions on it (I think). It was things like why I chose to make a career change into midwifery, how my previous experience prepared me for a future career in nurse midwifery, what kind of support I have for entering the rigors of GEP, what types of leadership positions I've held... She asked me to elaborate on a number of things from my resume, such as international experiences and leadership experiences. I don't know how interviews will differ for various specialties. My interview was 1-on-1 rather than a group setting.
Hi aspiring midwife -
The interview went fine! It sounded to me like they have little influence over how many people they can accept. She told me they make their recommendations, and the GEP program says how many they can take. I hope we find out sooner than May . . . my second choice school starts in May. Cutting it close!!! Have you decided if you would go to OHSU? They're number 1 in US news and world report this year! Big congrats on getting in there! Let's keep in touch if we hear anything. . .
Hi,
For all of you who applied to the UIC program and others around Chicago, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing your backgrounds. Your academic gpa in both previous degrees and for the pre-reqs, gre score, volunteer or healthcare field backgrounds.
I was going to apply to the UIC GEP program, but since I didn't have time to study for the GRE and had virtually no volunteer experience in a hospital, I decided despite a very high GPA, that I probably wouldn't get in.
I really have no idea of the competition for the the various nursing programs in Chicago.. and some stories make me think a 3.9 GPA isn't going to even get me into a program unless I have years of volunteer work under my belt.
It seems like each specialty looks for different things in their candidates. For example, I know someone who interviewed for the Family NP option and she told me the interviewers seemed more interested in the people who had previous health care experience. I also remember one of the current students who ran a GEP info session said she didn't have any hospital experience at all and I believe she was in the community health program. So overall, I believe it really depends on which specialty you apply to.
Has anyone heard about final decisions yet?

By the way, Jennifer Tiffen sent out the interview email that I received. You may want to contact her if you haven't heard anything at all.
