Any good Psych nurse units near Dayton, OH?

Published

We're considering moving to Beavercreek, OH area from Southern CA. Are there any good psych depts near Beavercreek? I'd love to work at Wright-Pat or VA hospital, but not sure how good they are in the area. I have experience with NICU also, but enjoy Psychiatric nursing more. Also, we have two children in elementary school and were looking for a good area for families. I heard Yellow Springs, OH is nice but the housing seems really high (same price as what we pay here in CA...kind of defeats the point of moving to OH for cheaper living). Thanks!:nurse:

Hmmmm... about the only thing that I can advise is to ask on the Ohio Nursing board. Go up to the top of your screen where it says "Region", click and scroll down to "United States", and then scroll down to Ohio Nursing Forum.

My father in law's ex wife works for a mental health network in that area called Eastway.... look them up, that might give you a link to a job. Good luck. =)

Google "Premier Health Partners." They have several hospitals in the area; in particular, Miami Valley Hospital is well known for being a Level 1 trauma center, but I'm sure they probably offer psychiatric services as well. Happy hunting!

Kettering Medical Center and Miami Valley Hospital both have psych services. I worked for both during the several years I lived in Dayton a while back (although as a psych CNS, not as a staff nurse), and was v. happy with both as employers. Kettering has a larger number of beds and wider range of services -- they have (or, did at that time) the only child inpatient program in the area.

One thing about Ohio is that you pay for the city you live in pretty much. If they are that high they probably are a really good school system, live on golf courses, and beatiful landscaping thourghout the city. But 2 exits up the same house may be 3/4 the price because its in a different part. One example in my neck of the woods is Indian Hill. Really expensive houses for people with to much money. The land is very hilly, roads are really curvy and in kinda poor shape. But millionaires live there. Another is Mason, a $350,000 house there will cost you $250,000 to 280,000 - 10 minutes from it and in a different school district. Same acreage, etc.

I-75 runs right thru these places and you have multiple areas to choose from. Contact a real estate agent and have them e-mail you some homes in different areas and talk with them. Or just do a on line search. Some popular ones in this area are Sibcy Cline, Century 21,Coldwell Banker, Remax. I used Remax when I sold mine and they were pretty good.

Also areas around hospitals are nicer ones usually, but 20 minute drive will save you thousands. Can rate the school systems as well. I'm not a expert on that subject, but I'm sure a real estate agent gets asked that all the time.

I don't know much about the hospitals there, but I went to school about five miles from Yellow Springs. It's a terrific little community, best known as home to financially-struggling hippie college Antioch. You'll find nary a Republican, lots of farmers' markets, organic pizza, and lovely old houses. There are bike trails that connect many of the towns - biking is great in Ohio, as it's so flat! Outside of Yellow Springs, it's a lot more farm houses and tract developments (Beaver Falls) and corn - cheaper, but less character. Yellow Springs is a love-it-or-hate-it kind of place. I hate Ohio, but I'd consider moving to Yellow Springs ;)

Good luck in decision-making!
