Hello everyone,

I haven't posted much but I'm currently in the process of applying for the new graduate nursing boards for the Air Force. I graduate with my bachelors of nursing in May!! I thought it would be nice to connect and see if anyone else is applying for the new graduate board selection. My recruiter told me they meet and make decisions in July. If I get it, I'll be heading to COT in October!

Currently, the recruiter has me picking out bases that I would like to be selected at for NTP. I'm also awaiting a medical exam date. If anyone has any input on great places to start out my nursing career, let me know!

Thanks!

There are only 4 bases that have the NTP program, unless you are referring to NRP which is the year long "training" program for new grads which is after NTP. You can either go to San Antonio, TX, Scottsdale, AZ, Cincinnati, OH or Tampa, FL. The list you attached is for the bases that have the NRP and RAF Lakenheath, UK is missing which also offers the NRP.

I just finished up the NRP and have been upgraded. I am happy to answer any questions you may have :)

And just to clarify for the group: Nurses entering the Air Force with less than 1 year of civilian RN experience must go to a general new grad training program at a temporary duty station (TDY) for 3 months; this is the Nurse Transition Program (NTP). There are only a few options for that (see previous post: SAMMC, Wright Patt, etc). Following that, new grads move to their permanent station (PCS) and are in an un-deployable 'learning phase' for 1 year: this is the nurse residency program (NRP). NRP can only be completed at certain bases (see my list that included Anchorage, Travis (CA), etc). This PCS location is what you are 'picking' on your dream sheet. While on NRP status nurses are 46N1's (or 1-levels); they become 46N3's (or 3-levels) upon completion (15 months after starting NTP).

My application is going well so far. How about yours? I'm currently stuck on medical stuff. Apprarently, something on my forms thru up a red flag for them so they have requested more documentation. I'm hoping that gets approved soon. As far as credentials, I have a 3.5, prior tech experience, 5 LORs so far, and no military experience! What about you??

I'm excited and nervous as well. I'm just hoping my medical forms get approved so that I can focus on preparing for the chief nurse interview!

Hi guys!

How is everyone's application process going?! What are some of your credentials as far as GPA/work experience/LOR's/military experience?

I know it's only March, but I'm getting excited/anxious about the CN interview and boards meeting! :nailbiting:

Ashdx21,

My application is slowly but surely coming together! I'm currently finishing up an Accelerated BSN program so my work load is CRAZY right now, but I plan on having everything in to my recruiter by the end of April. I haven't met face to face with my recruiter yet (he said we may meet some time in April), we have only been in contact via email so far. Have you met with yours? And I hope all of your medical stuff works out!

I'm worried my credentials won't be enough: I have a 3.9 (member of SigmaTTI), currently working as a Mental Health Associate, 4 LOR's so far, and absolutely no military experience (except I dated a guy in the Army, so I got a glimpse of what it was like). Seems like a lot of people that have gotten accepted in the past have had prior military experience, do you know if this weighs heavily on the boards decision making?

I'm also looking to apply to the OB route. Do you want med-surg or OB?

And thanks jfratian, for a lot of the helpful information!

Wow I think your credentials are great! I feel like the 3.9 GPA will really help. I was very worried because 3.5 is the minimum now and that is what I have! I'm also a member of SigmaTT so I hope that helps us both!

I have briefly met with my recruiter in person, but he is stationed about 4 hours from me normally. We usually communicate through email as well. As far as military experience, I'm not sure how much that counts. I'm in the same boat as you. My husband was in the Marine Corps, but that doesn't count for me at all other than experience with military lifestyle. I'm thinking it doesn't weigh more than any other part of the application.

I'm going med-surg route! Glad to have someone that is applying as well to talk about the anxiety and nervousness of the process :) !

I wish I could get a recruiter to e-mail me back! After I graduate this Summer, I'm going to start being more persistent and showing up on their doorsteps. :)

Hello Jfratian...Hello Dreaming....after my long application/acceptance/COT...I needed a break from allnurses. You guys were helpful. Dreaming...how did all the travelling and settling go? My buddy that I am replacing in Pulmonary clinic (they pulled me from cathlab :( but the needs of the AF comes first :) is heading to Korea for short tour then Germany. He is excited and I am excited for him. He is such a great Airman...I am really really glad I got to meet him. Jfratian...what is the next base you would like to head to? On another note...I got an email today informing me that I am heading to AEPS in San Antonio unless I turn it down....I had no clue what AEPS is and still not sure how to prep for it...if I even need to...any idea?

I haven't been yet, but I'm pretty sure AEPS is the TDY where you build a forward treatment facility (tents and all). Everyone is supposed to go before their 1st deployment band, but that's not always how it turns out.

Oh, and I've since met that LT who is an OT at Elmendorf we spoke about.

Hello! I joined all nurses just for this thread! Haha. I applied for June/July select as well! My recruiter told me there are 50 available slots for medsurg compared to last year and around 100-150 applicants. Not sure how accurate the numbers are. I choose AFB Travis, it's close to home. And after that I just told my recruiter anywhere that I will get the best experience is perfectly fine with me. Not so picky.

TinkyT, are you applying to the NTP or FQ route? Last year there were 35 total spots for NTP, about 5 for OB and the rest medsurg. There were also over 300 applicants last year. It would be wonderful if this year there were more openings and less applicants. However, I'm curious how the recruiters have different information. My recruiter says similar openings this year from last year. Last year someone on Allnurses.com said something similar to you, that there were more openings and less applicants, but it ended up being not true...I'm not doubting you, simply being cautious about good news!

I'm apply to the NTP. Im a new grad. Haha I totally get you. That's why I'm pretty confused to. I read the previous forums for last year. So I had to double check with my recruiter and she assured me that there are 50 slots. I also spoke with another HP recruiters from the same office. She told me how last year was unexpectedly low. (35 slots) she said it was due to budgeting. She said it's usually 50 slots. And I'm assuming she's guessing 100-150 applicants due to the new GPA requirements? I was also told the board meets in June. Were you told the same as well? What information have you gotten? (I apologize in advance my grammar and spelling is not so well) lol

I applied last year and wasn't accepted, that's how I have this info from last year. My recruiter told me the board meets in July this year, like last year. We "should" have results around the end of July, however last year we were put on hold due to financial issues. We didn't find out until August.

Last year someone claimed there would be more openings and less applicants, exactly like what you are saying actually haha they did change the GPA requirement last year to a 3.4 and this year it is a 3.5, so we probably will have less applicants. However I'm not sure it will go from 300 down to 100, seems too good to be true. My recruiter told me there will be 35 spots this year, like last year. Unfortunately recruiters tend to have different information depending on their sources and such. All I know is I'm "hoping" for the best, but not getting my hopes up too high just to be safe.
