Any Adult/Geriatric CNS's around?

Hi All,

I'm looking into grad schools (probably planning to apply within the next 1-2 years) and wondering if there are any Adult/Geriatric Clinical Nurse Specialists lurking around the board. I'd love to find out more about the path you took to get where you are, and what your job is like. Thanks in advance!

I'm an adult health CNS. I work full-time in nephrology and part time in an ER. I've been an APN since 2006. My nursing background is 1 year med-surg, 1 year ICU, 10 years ER.

HI, my name is Dana, I will be completing my masters degree in May 09. The facility where I work has tratitionally hired either CNS's or NP's into the CNS position. I decided to go for the NP for maximum flexibility. With this degree I can work as a Nurse practitioner, CNS or as a nursing instructor. If you go for the CNS you are more limited to working in the hospital setting and in hard times the position can be eliminated leaving you out in the cold.

I'm a CNS and worked in a physician's office setting, so that title doesn't necessarily limite you. I think it depends on where you live statewise.

Definitely depends on your state. I'm an adult health CNS who works in a large nephrology practice alongside PAs, NPs. We all do the same exact job and are all well-regarded by the practice.
