For nursing school, my instructors provided the iclickers for us and collected them at the end of class. For general education undergrad classes, we had to buy the clickers. I bought mine on-line, which was waaaaaay cheaper than the on-campus bookstore. I actually liked the clickers. I'm one of those students that DO NOT like to raise my hand during lectures in fear of answering a question wrong, so it was nice to participate and remain anonymous when answering a question even if it was incorrect.
In some of my 400+ person classes, the teachers actually used them to do quizzes, because while the info is anonymous on screen, you can attach IDs and Names to Clicker Numbers. For smaller classes, I wouldn't bother with the clicker. For what it sounds like you want, it would be just as effective to set up an anonymous poll and ask the students to bring their laptops to class and answer online during class. After everyone is finished, you can pull up the results, or just report them out loud.
At OSU there are a bunch of classes where you're required to have your own clicker and participate by answering questions that way. In my CNA class (in a completely different state so I guess OSU is irrelevant), we only had five students so everything was really laid back and everyone was comfortable with each other. We didn't have quizzes, just reviewed and practiced what we learned then took a chapter test each class.

Did your instructors use Iclickers in class? To ask questions and then you use the Iclicker to respond, it is anonymous but it shows how the class responded. I wonder if this would help them learn or if you liked them as a student or if they helped you. It would be expensive for me to purchase if they aren't worth it.
