Another Nurse Bites the Dust...

I found out this afternoon that a co-worker of mine is leaving nursing to become an FBI agent. While I am happy for her, this is another loss for nursing, as yet another one leaves our profession for greener pastures...

How ironic! My daughter is an FBI Agent...and wishes she were a nurse!

I'm just starting out in nursing school. It's very difficult reading a post like this because it makes me wonder if I should reconsider my choice. A profession, just like life, is what you make of it - that is what I've always thought.....or is this my naivete showing??

Just curious why she thinks we've got the greener grass...

She has to work some pretty difficult hours and she has young children..She would like to work baylor or a couple of nights, etc....she doesn't have any idea what nursing entails.....just thinks the hours would be better....I told her to get a good baby sitter to help when her Husband is not at home...!! It seems silly to give up her great pay, future retirement , etc.....She is more concerned now because she has to deal with a lot of terrorist info,activity, etc. and it makes her worry about her girls. It still is a nicer life than nursing...even though I loved being a nurse prior to my retirement....I am glad she gets to see another side of life.....but .....she still thinks that one day she will go to nursing school.....?????

i agree with you. when you see posts such as these it makes you wonder what you are getting in to. don't worry about it, if nursing is what you want to do, then do it. remember that this board does not speak for the entire nursing profession, people come here to vent and give advice. when i was a student, i had tons of people telling me i was making a mistake. i don't feel i have made a mistake at all because i knew from the beginning that nursing was not a glamorous job. but i help people everyday and i know i make a difference in the lives of people that are ill and suffering. like any career its what you make it. everyone can find something about their careers that they don't like. and also keep in mind that hospital nursing is the biggest complaint. there are tons of things to do in nursing you don't have to be "stuck" or unhappy. don't let anyone discourage you. good luck and keep your head up

Just remember what I said about the FBI Agent who wants to be a nurse.....It works both ways....everything is not always as it seems at first glance! :)

i just wanted to add that the people who were telling me not to be a nurse were other nurses which is understandable because they have their own personal experiences to draw from. i always respect the opinion of people that have been around awhile and believe me their advice did not fall on deaf ears, but at the same time i knew that this was what i wanted to do. nursing is not for everyone and the best way to find that out is to work in a hospital in different specialties to get a feel for the environment. just think about when you or someone in your family was sick in the hospital, think about who was at the bedside the most. who cleaned up body fluids, who assessed your condition constantly, medicated you, kept other family members informed etc..certaintly not the docs. nursing is all this plus some, but to me it is rewarding work. there are some specialties i don't care for (i work ED) and can i honestly say i will always do bedside nursing? i don't know. but the more realistic you are about this career, the better off you will be.

Thank you angel337 and jenreg123 for your response and good wishes. I am going into this field with my eyes open and I have never really found that elusive "glamorous" job, so I don't really ever expect to find it! I know that everyone vents - there's nothing wrong with that. Perhaps I just read too many vents tonight and had a momentary lapse of focus. My goal is to work in the ED and I'll work my nubs off to get there... as soon as I'm done with school, that is..... Perhaps the grass is greener...worked in law enforcement for 7 years so glad to be out of it!! To each his/her own!!

and i would like to add that in the worst, most hellish shifts/days/even weeks that i wondered "when is this crap going to end?", i have NEVER regretted becoming a nurse. never.

About half the nurses I work with are very positive and encouraging when they learn I'm majoring in "the n-word."

Of those who tell me I must be crazy, about half are laughing when they say it.

Wow, that sounds exciting. Heck, I'd leave nursing to be an FBI agent. That would be just too attractive to pass up!
