Another male nurse maybe

Published

I received my "tentative" acceptance letter in the mail from NCC. I am very excited about this news after reading and hearing how difficult it is to get into this program. However, reading these forum makes me nervous about my survival in the program itself--especially due to the fact that I work full time and cannot change that fact. However, it seems that the more scary stories I read, the more I get motivated to do well--as in to kick it up a notch from the mind frame I had in my A & P classes. I received an A in A&P 1 and on the verge of getting an A in 2.

In any case, I feel privileged to being accepted in the evening program knowing how difficult it would be because so few seats are available. I hope I don't feel too "weird" in an environment where there are few and far between males to interact with. LOL

Congratulations! Best of luck if you decide to enter the program!

First off, congrats!! I'm a guy who is starting a nursing program in the Fall. I have a little bit experience in the whole 'going against the grain' scenario as I've been a Stay At Home dad for the past 8 years.

When I first started out and began meeting people (mostly at-home moms), most were very cool and accepting and embraced the idea that we were all PARENTS doing what was best for our kids. Some were not-so accepting and focused on the gender difference. Shame on them for making their decisions based on exterior vs. interior plumbing, and I was happy to not associate with them.

If students are going to be uncomfortable because you're a guy, oh well. You're not going to be EVERYBODY'S best friend. I bet you'll eventually find other students to will be happy to study/practice with you. They will tend to be more mature and well-rounded people anyway.

Good luck!!

You'd do better to not think of yourself as a male nursing student, but rather as a nursing student. The number of men entering the field of nursing is increasing dramatically; they aren't "few and far between" so much anymore. While women do outnumber the men, you do yourself a disservice to go with the 'male nurse' thinking. It's tough enough to be a nurse regardless of the flavor of your swimsuit ;)

I think that's awesome!!! We need more men in this field. I love working with nurses that are male because they bring different qualities and it balances out having all female co-workers. Anyway, congrats!!

I agree we need more men in the nursing field!!! Congrats!!!

Congratulations! My nursing class is 25% male, not so few and far between after-all.
