ok....I'm about to blow my top here lately......let me explain.
I am in an 18 month LPN program at a technical school. We have a class that has 5 or 6 students doing really well, and the rest are failing or barely getting by, and treat it as if it's a big joke. Our instructor (we have the same instructor for everything for the first 9 months, and then switch to another instructor for the second nine months)...anyway...our instructor has given the same speech about the bad grades at least 5 times...and given "indications" that if they don't they will be withdrawn...or that they will need to withdraw themselves. Well, those that are in the failing category...they laugh about it after class...they know she isn't going to do anything about it. They don't care about their grades or nursing...most of them are just there because their parents are "hounding" them to be somebody and do something with their life...and this program is their answer for that. They don't study, they laugh when they get 30's and 40's on tests...(and by the way, one of these people got a 0 on a test that they were there for...took...and missed EVERY question).
I don't know why the instructor won't cut them....this has been going on since the second week of school. I agree that everyone should be given a second chance...and they were....but now it's just getting out of hand...and they won't withdraw themselves. Our instructor allready said that we won't cover all of the material we need to because of the slackers....so we will be covering some material on our own over the summer....I don't think it is fair that we pay that same tuition and have to suffer...and not learn all that we should because of them!
I'm not bragging...but I've made all A's & B's on everything...and I really want to be a nurse....but this is getting rediculous!!!!!! Any Advice???? I really need some advice to get me through at this point...I'm feeling pretty "put-out" and dicouraged.
Thanks!
It's just very frustrating...the handbook says if you don't maintain an 80 or about in ALL subjects...you're out...yet that is CLEARLY not what is happening. I'm just tired of being ready to test, and move on...but still spend 3 weeks on a chapter and those slackers STILL fail the test. It is beyond rediculous!
That's supposed to be 80% or ABOVE.....sorry...typing too fast!
Education is a commodity that you are paying for. Since you aren't getting the service you paid for, I would be complaining loud and long - start with your instructor with a written letter outlining how this is affecting you and take it on up the food chain.
If you don't do something formally, you can almost be sure that nothing will be done. Those students will remain in the school as long as the administration believes they can get some fees out of them. If they are dismissed, then the school must attempt to replace the revenue source. Education is a business. However, you have paid your fees too and deserve to get what you paid for. Complain. In writing.
It sounds horrible...but I guess what I am having trouble understanding, is why does this bother you so much? The reason that this bothers me is that I feel that I am paying for an education that I will not receive the full benefit of. We've already been told we are too far behind to catch up and cover all that we need to cover before the end of the school year....which means we have to cover it on our own in order to be ready for 2nd year. Not only that, I'm sick of sitting through the "speech" to those who are failing...we all have to sit there and listen to it...and I think that is totally unfair when some of us are doing great...yet we have to sit there, and give up 20 minutes of class time for these "speeches".

Ok...NOW I understand (and AGREE) with your frustration.
I would probably get a group of 3 or 4 students together and go talk to the instructor.
Start out on the positive, and let them know that you know they are only trying to help everyone get a good grade on the exam...and help everyone that needs it...but let them know that the 'slacker' group are really making a mockery of the entire thing...and you feel they should know that.
Tell them that you all just want to make sure that everything will be sufficiently covered...b/c you are concerned that it won't be.
That is not attacking them, it's praising them for wanting to help the students...and shows the instructor that you care.
Let them take it from there.
Although I understand your frustrastion, you are going to need to cover that stuff on your own and do what YOU need to do to graduate.
I took the 10 month LPN program at a local technical school. Out of 42 students, we ended up with around 29. I would be stretching it if I said that many 10-15 people were serious about the program. The big study group was a major party group. I put up with talking, fights between the instructor and students, threats against the whole class by a father, etc. But as far as I was concerned I was going to graduate - no matter what. I waited until 42 to achieve my dream and no one was getting in the way. Don't waste your energy on worrying about them. Don't waste your energy on trying to get them kicked out - honestly nothing will be done about it. Keep you head up, your smile on, find out what you need to study and finish.
And don't forget we are here if you need to vent. :)
The really awful part is that these students probably filled the spots of others who really wanted to be nurses. I just applied to my schools nursing program and out of 250 applicants they accept 30. I would be devestated to learn that a spot I could have filled had went to a slacker.
you are exactly right...one of my close friends whom also applied and DOES want to be a nurse did not get in:cry:...there were no spots left for her (the slackers had them all). So now she is reapplying to start this fall. The sad thing is that we could have taken the program together and it would have been great (we also took CNA together 7 years ago)...but instead, we are each going to be doing it on our own.
I can't even find anyone in our class that is even interested in forming a study group, etc....it's like everyone is in it for themselves and by themselves....no support for each other at all. Honestly, I would gladly even open up a study group to the slackers (maybe it would help them)...but again...no interest at all.
