i am in the middle of my prereqs right now. i haven't taken any science classes yet, i couldn't get into a&p i because i don't have priority registration for spring. at the end of 2010 all i'll have left is a&p i&ii, chem, and micro (taking only math online in the fall because we're going to be moving during the semester). but, my husband is in the military and we are going to be moving around a lot. i'm worried as soon as i finish all my prereqs and get into a program, we're gonna have to move. so i'm debating whether or not to take the lvn path first. i have all my prereqs for lvn except biology. the programs are shorter that way. i'm just not sure yet. what would you do?

i would do the LVN program if you think you will be where you are living for the amount of time needed to finish the program so yo can at least start working when you move. the you can go to college and take the LVN to RN upward mobility program. To be a RN plus you will get experidence working in the medical area.

I can completely relate! We are also a military family and I started college back in 2006. My son was just beginning preK so I started out slow to meet his and my daughters needs and schedule. I increased to part time as they grew older. Last year I completed all of my prereq's and applied to the nursing program (I was surprised that we somehow have been stationed at the same assignment for the past 7yrs). I got accepted! Only, soon after being accepted we found out that my husband was being assigned a career change and we would most likely be transferring to another duty station this coming January. I had to decline my seat that very week. It broke my heart to do so, but I couldn't allow myself to begin a program and take up a seat that someone else could have.
In the meantime I got my CNA certificate so I could quit my horrible custodial job. I am sort of torn on whether that was even a smart move because while it builds a more rounded resume, I am doing dirtier work now, and seriously lost a 1.25per hour in the switch. But, I do feel like I am helping people so that helps me feel justified in the decision.
Fast forward- So my husband is almost through his tech school, he gets done Jan 14th. We still have no orders! I went ahead and reapplied for the program incase we get to be here, and have registered to take micro in the spring because IF we do move, chances are great that it will be a requirement for other nursing programs, even though it isn't here.
I say, do all you can to prepare for whichever program you choose. It is very hard when you are military dependent and nothing is set in stone, but don't let it deter you from chasing your own dreams and setting them in motion!! I was also told, if I began a program and could at least commit a year into it, there were very good odds that another institution would work with the program to help make the programs mesh. :)
If nothing else, stay motivated and do what you can!!
Thank you for the support and motivation. I suppose I shall just keep chugging along with my ASN prereqs (they're almost done anyways) and just cross bridges as they come. I will be a even if it takes me longer than average.

Good luck to you in your path to becoming a nurse. But most of all I would like to thank your husband, you and your family for the sacrifices you make everyday as a military family. The work and sacrifices your husband makes for our country are appreciated and the sacrifices and support you and your family give him and our country are also recognized and appreciated. My dream of being a nurse could never be realized without the sacrifices the military men and women and their families make to give our country the freedoms we enjoy. Thank You!!!!
