I thought some might find this interesting. It seems to concede that things are not great, but the nursing shortage is real in the sense that if the economy were strong, we'd be in really bad shape as regards availability of nurses.

Here in chicago there are a ton of nursing opportunities. It's just the New Grads that have the issue but that's usually how it is. Once you get some experience you can find a job quite easily. I've applied for a ton of jobs, most of which you have to have 6mts to 2 years of experience. needless to say I haven't been contacted for any of those positions, and have been contacted for 1 new grad positions which I am awaiting my scheduled interview.
Best of luck to you in your interview, I hope you get the job!
It's more or less the same here in Detroit. I see TONS of job postings at the local hospitals for experienced nurses, and while there are a few externships and positions available to student nurses, there are very few positions that will take new grads.
I am hopeful that the economy will have improved enough by the time I graduate with my BSN in '12 that I'll be able to find something.
there are positions out there for new grads, but sometimes you can't be picky so you can get your foot in the door. Thanks you, I will let you know how it goes.

That is exactly how I feel...I will hopefully (!) be graduating in 2013, and maybe the timing will be right so that I will be able to land a job easily.

What I'm thinking is that a few years down the line...maybe 5 to 10...we're really going to be in BIG trouble, nurse-wise.
By that time all the nurses who came out of retirement to work when the economy started tanking will be re-retired. The folks who would be in NS right now but aren't going because they're afraid they won't get jobs...well, they'll all be in some other profession. And the population of America just keeps getting older and older every day.
My prediction is that those of us who can hang in there and ride out the next few years will be in a sweet position to get whatever jobs we want, where ever we want to be.

yeah new grad positions here are slim pickings as well. It sucks-job hunting is no fun (I am currently doing it as I just passed NCLEX last week). Hopefully by the time some of those here who graduate that the job market will be more favorable.
