Amped about Nursing school!

Published

I'm applying to an ADN program for Fall 2012 and I just wanted to know from current/past students how is the program as far as clinicals, workload, etc.? Also how did you all adjust to the 1st semester since its a completely different learning experience from the pre-reqs?...Also how are clinicals set up?; sorry for all the questions, I'm just ready to become a nurse! Lol; Any advice will be appreciated!

Say good-bye to your social life. If they have you a syllabus I would try and get all the homework done for the term as quickly as you can that way you can focus on reading all your chapters for class weekly. I learned this later on when I would get stressed out on the hours of homework I would get and not enough time to just read. Everyone is different with their studies, that just worked for me and a lot of my classmates.

I found that clinicals was a lot of fun. If you have a question not matter how big or small don't be scared to ask them. If you are uncomfortable doing something say so.

Ok thank you so much! I'm looking forward to the clinical aspect of Nursing school that way all the Anatomy/Physio will come into play; were you nervous before starting clinicals?

I start all of my clinicals for the first time next week and I am just as amped as you! It's true that you throw all social life out the window but just remember you can party just as hard AFTER all school is out of the way.

Good luck, I would love to know how it goes for you in the Fall!

I remember when I took A&P at the community college I got so frustrated learning all the information but it was all worth it when I walked into my first day of clinicals. My first term of nursing school I didn't have to do clinical's because I had been a CNA for a few years and my class was learning basic care things. Now when it came to the second term, I was so nervous and excited. I don't know how to explain the feelings I felt the first time I gave insulin to a patient or the first time I was able to change a dressing besides the word accomplished with a side of being nervous at first. It made all the years I've worked trying to get into a nursing program worth it. You will have your good and and you'll have a bad day here or there. When I had my clinical rotation at the VA clinic this other nurse was so mean to me it made me cry, but on the other hand, it gave me my back bone I needed to stand up for myself and be more assertive. The other nurse was in the wrong, not I. I needed rooms to room patients at the clinic and she kept taking the rooms which caused the patients to be super late for their appointments and doctors were getting upset and that nurse came and yelled at me after another doctor was yelling at me and I had to go and explain what was going on. My mentor at the clinic had a talk with that nurse for pretty much screwing over the student. A couple other nurses were on my side that I wasn't being treated fair and that I should also brush her off because she kind of rubs everyone the wrong way. Anyway, during your clinical's you will learn a lot about yourself and inner strength you didn't even realized that you had.

I wish you good luck during your journy. You will meet many people and touch the lives of others. Some images you will carry with you always that will drive you to keep on going and do the very best that you can to take care of your patients and be their advocate.

You can also party after every final. A lot of my classmates would go right to the bar after finals. It amused me. I've never been much of a drinker.

@ Annachu512: Good luck in your clinicals, you will do an awesome job!! Have faith in yourself!; yes, I will definitely let you know how I do in the Fall

@ Glenna: Your story gives me so much inspiration/motivation!! I want to help people( otherwise I wouldn't have made it through those darn Science prereqs lol) and I am willing to take the good and the bad to reach my goal. I'll think of Clinicals like one of my track races: Get out, stay the course, and when it feels unbearable remember that I love it.

I start my accelerated BSN program on Jan 17th. I am super excited, anxious, and nervous all at the same time! I know its gonna be a long & difficult year but I am looking forward to this journey. I can't wait!

@al1992 Good luck & I hope u get in to the program you are applying to. I can't answer your initial questions but at the end of this semester i will be more than willing to let you know my experiences.
