american taking nursing in the philippines

Published

hi. i am an american citizen taking up nursing in the philippines. some people have told me that i don't need to take the CGFNS. is that true? they are also telling me that i don't need to take the local board. i am planning to take the nclex in vermont since thats what everyone from here is filing to take. does the vermont bon require cgfns and the local board? does vermont have reciprocity with new york? how about hawaii? i have a lot of other questions but i think this will do for now. thanks.

Technically, that is correct if you want to work in a "non-cgfns state". Otherwise, since you are taking up nursing outside USA, it has to undergo credential review hence if you'd want to work in a "cgfns state", you might have to take the cgfns CES, or in some cases, need to earn the CG certificate.

You should have your own decision; don't do it because the majority does it. It should be from where you intend to work. Anyway, if you have read Suzanne's stickies, she mentioned that there is no such thing as reciprocity, only endorse. Yes, you can apply for endorsement from VT to NY, however, you'll need to have CGFNS CVS first. I'm not sure about Hawaii. Just check their website because each state has its own requirements for endorsement/licensing.

hi thanks for the reply. im new here, where do i find suzanne's stickies? i read up a little bit and vermont doesnt seem to be a cgfns state however, new york is. the only reason im interested in taking the vermont nclex is that it seems quicker interms of processing time and the requirements are less compared to the other states. if i take the nclex in a non cgfns state will i get endorsement from a cgfns state? i am from new york originally but plan to work in hawaii maybe...(surf's up! heehee)

You're welcome. Stickies are found above the usual threads here. They have the word "Sticky:(topic/thread)". Only mods and admin can post stickies. These are "must know/readme first" information.

You might, it depends on the state of intended employment's rules.

I'm not so sure about VTs speed. You have to take note of processing time though and you know, "unexpected bottlenecks".

So the best advice the most people give here is apply to where you want to work, that is the most efficient way. After all, the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, not a curved or zigzag line.

God bless!

Let me clear up some things for you. The NCLEX exam is a national exam, it is not state specific. And there is no such thing as reciprocity between states, it is only for the exam. You will need to endorse to the new state and fo thru their process. You have trained out of the US and therefore are a foreign grad, even if you hold a US passport, you will still be required to follow any required procedure that a foreign nurse does. Licensing requirements are different from US immigration requirements.

NY does not require the CGFNS exam, but they do require the CSV and you will need to go thru that process to work in NY. Any of the other states that require the CES, you will need to go thru that, and if they require the CGFNS exam, you will need to do that.

Going thru a state that you think is faster just to endorse is really a waste of time, it can take you longer to endorse than it would have taken to do things in the first place.

Vemont also is taking three to four months to give approval to sit for the NCLEX exam, and you cannot eve start the process until you have graduated, so not sure why you would wish to waste all of that time.

thanks for clearing that up. now my question is, since the nclex is a national exam wouldn't passing it, regardless of where you took the exam, and regardless of whether i took the cgfns or not, entitle you to work anywhere in the united states? i don't really care about the time it takes to get work. i just want to get done with the exams already. work can wait, really.

because you trained abroad you have to follow the requirements of a foreign trained nurse so if you passed NCLEX with one BON (ie NY who require CVS) and then want to move to another state (who requires CES) then you have to go through the process of CGFNS CES before they will allow you to endorce. More to do with where you did your training

so, ok lets say i take the exam in vermont, in order to work in ny i'd have to have a cvs processed? how about hawaii? is it cvs or ces state? i know i dont have to say it but...im confused!

each state has their own requirements and always best to check what they are for foreign training. CVS is only done for NY. Some states do their own assessment but a lot do use CES

To clear up a few more things for you:

Licensure in the US is based on more than just passing of the NCLEX-RN exam, that is only one part of the equation.

Your schooling must meet the requirements of any state that you wish to work in, and they do have different requirements in some states.

That you are American, only exempts you from immigration things but nothing to do with licensure requirements. If they want an English exam for the state requirement, then you will need to go thru that as well. Anything that is required of a foreign grad, you will need to go thru.

If NY, you will need to go thru the CVS process; if it is a state that requires the CES, then you will need to go thru that; and if they require the CGFNS exam for initial licensure, you will need to do that. You are not accorded any waivers for being American, it is based 100% on where you trained.

You will not be able to work quicky in any state, as you will not be able to submit your transcripts until after you have graduated, if you went to school in Ca, you could have taken the exam as soon as you finished your program, but you will have to get your transcripts evaluated by them.

thank you for you patience and in taking time to answer my questions. i did read up on the requirements for each state that im interested in working at. im just still confused about the endorsement process. i know i havent graduated yet but i already want to find out as much as i can so i wont be running around later on. like i said earlier i just want to get over the licensing thing as quickly as possible. i could find a job in 2 or 3 more years.

If you graduate out of the US, not one state will be quick for you. You will be unable to do a thing until you actually have graduated.
