Am i smart enough??

Where to start??

So i went and got my A.S. degree in Medical Office Administration I have a husband and 2 toddlers so it took me roughly 3 years to complete. Now that im done i realise that im not too happy. I cant find a job and its due mostly to the fact that theres nothing special about my degree. I mean i like it...but its something that someone can train for at work without the college education (i see that now)...I never thought of nursing as an option i always thought that was for the "smart" people...or someone without too much responsibility. Then i started getting sad/depressed. I wanted more and after some research i wanted to get my M.A...which would take 13 months. Thne I found a tech school near where i live and found an LPN program that takes 12 months full time. Which is the one that i want to pursue...i have NO idea if this is the right choice for me but it feels right you know? Im not the smartest person in the world and im very bad at memorizing anatomy and all that stuff. Thats when i ask myself "am i smart enough?" Anywho tomorrow is my orientation...i dnt have to take the TABE test since i have my A.S. but i do have to take the TEAS test...any tips on that?? Im very exited yet doubtful of my knowledge and ability to handle this program.......

MKUP29,

I've been thinking about taking that HUC course, does it look like a good program?

Thanks guys for the support!! So today i went to the orientation and the LPN for full time does not start until January...so for now Im gonna attend their health unit coordinator program. Its 4 months so in the end i get my HUC certification and also get certified as a monitor tech.Half the course is at school the other half at hospitals...if i can handle the schedule for this program then i will go ahead and do the LPN although the work will be much more.

Very good strategy! That will give you exposure to a job in health care and the opportunity to listen to nurses problem solve. This will add to your knowledge base while taking your LPN course work.

It does seem like a good program. Its half time at school the other half at the hospital. They teach how to "transcribe lab work, diagnostic tests, etc. Also to interpret and report deviations from normal sinus rhythm and operate the patient's heart monitors" well at least the school im goint to does :)

I'm thinking about Orlandotech, is that the one you're going to? If it is, do you think is going to be easy to get a job after finishing the program? I'm going to Nursing school next year and I'm looking for something that can get me in the medical field. I thought this can be a good option to get experience in the field while I'm in school.

yes im trying to go to Orlano tech...its start in August so your first step would b to attend their orientation on Thursdays at 8:00am or 5:00pm. I went to the 8:00 am and overall 30+ ppl showed up!! theres only like 24 seats so make sure you get there on time!! At the orientation you can ask ANY questions you have and they go over all the healthcare programs not just HUC and also financial aid. The orientation lady said that she has had students get a job offer from the hospitals where they did their clinicals...in other words just be your best at clinicals so you give a good impression but of course a job offer is not promised. Question? Do you have an AA or AS degree?? The reason im asking is because if you, they waive the TABE test which is the entry test you have to take. Most ppl dont have a degree so they have to take the TABE test. You can register, pay the $25 registration fee, pay $24 for the background chek and take the TABE test right after the orientation (only if your ready!). After you do all that they give you a packet. In that packet you have some papers that have to b filled out. They request an updated physical and shots etc so one of the papers is for your doctor to fill out. You also need your high school transcripts. Once you have all the forms done you call a number they give you to make an appt with the counselor so you can register for the class. If its full i think they put you on the waiting list that is why you should get that packet and finish the paperwork as soon as possible. Be prepared the day of orientation in case you want to register that day. I dnt want to be driving around so I took my AS diploma (they make a copy so i wouldnt have to take the TABe) my i.d., my fafsa printout etc and I did everything.I couldnt figure out financial aid this week bc they wont have that info until about 2 wks. OMG this is a long message SORRY!. On a side note: this course is too short for a pell grant which is what the gov offers but if you qualify they will give you a school scholarship that covers tuition and lab i believe then you only worry about the books/uniforms/supply...around $400 thats better then everything which is around $2,000.00 If you want to try for the schools scholarship make sure to take your chek stubs and ur spouses if they work. ANY MORE QUESTIONS PLEASE ASK! hope this helped and not confused you lol

Thank you so much for the info! I'm doing the orientation next week without a doubt.

your welcome!! Let me know if you decide to take it for this August we might c each other!!

Repeating what I said in another post. I don't believe in "smart enough", unless its smart enough to study and work hard. If you put in the time and effort, you will get the results you seek. It may require a different way of studying than you are used to, but I totally disagree that this is for smart people. The people that are successful are just smart enough to know that it takes serious effort and hard work.

I found that my local library had no TEAS prep books as there are none on the market, outside of the one published by the test maker (ATI). I didn't see any TEAS specific prep books at my local bookstore nor on Amazon.com. I saw non-ATI online test prep sites (which I don't trust) and ATI's book on their site (which I highly recommend). The schools out here in CA often don't consider retest scores (only the score from your first attempt), so bite the bullet and find some cash to buy the test prep from ATI (online or book form). good luck!

HI heather, my library doesnt have any teas books either :( but i found them at barnes and noble. Try the website first i know that they have the Version V on sale for $28 but its online only. If you need it right away try calling the store to see if they have it in stock but at the store it will be regular price $38.95. Its better to get it online and its free shipping you only pay for tax which it all comes out to be $29 something not bad :) i believe it takes 2-5 days to arrive. Good luck!
