Am i smart enough??

Where to start??

So i went and got my A.S. degree in Medical Office Administration I have a husband and 2 toddlers so it took me roughly 3 years to complete. Now that im done i realise that im not too happy. I cant find a job and its due mostly to the fact that theres nothing special about my degree. I mean i like it...but its something that someone can train for at work without the college education (i see that now)...I never thought of nursing as an option i always thought that was for the "smart" people...or someone without too much responsibility. Then i started getting sad/depressed. I wanted more and after some research i wanted to get my M.A...which would take 13 months. Thne I found a tech school near where i live and found an LPN program that takes 12 months full time. Which is the one that i want to pursue...i have NO idea if this is the right choice for me but it feels right you know? Im not the smartest person in the world and im very bad at memorizing anatomy and all that stuff. Thats when i ask myself "am i smart enough?" Anywho tomorrow is my orientation...i dnt have to take the TABE test since i have my A.S. but i do have to take the TEAS test...any tips on that?? Im very exited yet doubtful of my knowledge and ability to handle this program.......

You can get a practice book from the TEAS website. Make sure you know what version to buy. You will have to ask your college which version they use. It is very similar to the real test. It will also give you solutions to the questions. I used it to and scored a 96 percent on my TEAS. It helped me brush up on a few things.

You are making the best decision to do the LPN program and not the MA. You have more opportunities with the LPN degree. Not to mention you can bridge from an LPN to RN. It will also give you some insight on the nursing profession without putting too much time into the prerequisites it takes to get into an ASN or BSN program. My wife is a MA and she wishes she would have done the LPN. Good luck!

You can't find a job because of the economy. I don't think it has to do with your degree. It's the current economic state we are in.

Please keep in mind that even if you go to LPN school, you may not find a job. Don't let employment be your motivation.

You can get better at memorization with time, and you will need to memorize anatomy and physiology. You just have to find the best technique for yourself. And you have to put in the effort and time.

It took me well over a year to truly decide on nursing. I thought about many different career paths and I was actually enrolled in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program before I went into the nursing program. I'm not sure how long you've really thought about this, it seems you are still searching for what you really want. Go for the degree in the field that makes you happy. Don't base your career decisions on employment or salary factors.

Hey thanks for the reply...i decided on the LPN for that same reason. It would mean more opportunities plus theres that LPN to Rn bridge program as for the MA i would have to start from scratch...

happy2learn: yea i know what you mean it is the economy and i also understand that even with my lpn it will take a while to get a job. I did think this over not so much as a year but about 6 months. Im glad with my decision, i guess i will have to study very hard and use repetiotion to memorize :) thank you!

As long as your happy with your decision, then good luck!:)

Hello,

I am in Tampa and I just finished the TEAS this past Saturday. With my first attempt, I passed. At the tech school here, the overall passing percentage is 70% or higher. There were 4 sections and I figured if I was strong in 2 out of 4, my chances were ok. People who were there had 4-5 page notes front and back, highlighted and all. I felt, going in there, I was lacking. Yes, I hold an A.A. degree in General Studies with no medical background, so you can imagine the intimidation. During breaks I spoke with people who that test was their 2nd and 3rd attempt. One lady said she wished she never purchased the book and found that the online materials helped more.

I believe you will be fine. Are you smart enough? Sure. You just believe in yourself and remember, never second-guess yourself! God Bless! :clown:

Thanks guys for the support!! So today i went to the orientation and the LPN for full time does not start until January...so for now Im gonna attend their health unit coordinator program. Its 4 months so in the end i get my HUC certification and also get certified as a monitor tech.Half the course is at school the other half at hospitals...if i can handle the schedule for this program then i will go ahead and do the LPN although the work will be much more.

That is super! You go girl!:yeah:

Hehe thanks! Now i gotta study for that TEAS test..my library doesnt carry any study guides on it and i dnt got the $ to buy the study books online :( since you took it already would you say that studying any other college level math/sci/eng would compensate???

I feel like this all the time, am I smart enough to become an RN? Then I remember that it takes hard work, and if I put in the time and effort I can do anything I WANT. I have a hubby and 5 kids, so if I can do it you can too! Good luck!

Wow thats great thanks!! if you can handle all that i can handle my 2 kids :) And i do WANT this!
