No way...you'll do fine. I started nursing school when I was 50 and will graduate next year at 53 :)

I think you should go for it!!!!! :) There are a few women in my class that are over 50 and they are doing GREAT!!! Most of the women in my class are like me and over 30!!!!

Follow your dreams! I too have always wanted to be a nurse and am now 42 years old and just finished my first semester of LPN school. I started school last fall and took my prereqs for LPN (giong to school fulltime) being a fulltime mom,and caring for the horses also,(we live on a farm). I sometimes feel a bit overwhelmed, but I keep thinking of the reasons why I am doing this. I plan to go to a BSN program at the university after I am done with the ADN program. If I could have only had the confidence that I have now when I graduated from high school I would probably be a DR. now. Good luck!

I went back to school when I was 36.

We had someone in our class who was 56....

You can do it!

[/i]I think you should go for it! As long as you are breathing, you can do whatever it is you desire! You are probably blessed with more patience and understanding now than in your 20's, and you will need both these things to get through school and your practicals! I was 32 when I began LVN school, and now at 38, I am soon going to be working on becoming a RN!! with 3 children, 2 dogs, husband, and 2 saltwater tanks...i will probably be close to 45 before i finish!! LOL !! go for it....do what makes you happy!

I am 41, and was just accepted to the BSN program; there is at least one member of the class who is older than me. I believe our age brings a bit of maturity to the class. Additionally, we are often looked to for advice.

The one downfall I was told to be aware of: as an older nurse, it may be assumed that you have skills which you haven't developed. Your maturity may be misread as experience.

Good for it!

Heyfiandcamy,

I'm 52 and have one more semester to go to finish LPN school. The past year and a half has been fantastic. It took me a semester to finish up the prerequisites of Anatomy and Nutrition. A long time ago I took psychology, biology, college English, and I had to brush up on math in order to pass the nursing school entrance exam. The first test I flunked the math! Don't get discouraged. It is so MUCH FUN to get out there and meet and mix with people of all ages, lots of pressure sometimes but I love the clinical work, the study, everything about nursing!!! Last week I studied pharmacology to prepare for the final, with two girls who are both 21! But I have really forgotten about my age. It's just a number anyway. It may take you awhile to get your test taking skills up to par, for both the entrance and the tests after you get in. But there's never anything lost when you study. No such thing as failure when it comes to learning. :Melody:

i was just past my 40th birthday, when i was accepted into the lpn program. i too, thought that i'd be the oldest student, but there were others who were even in their fifties!! i always wanted to be a nurse :melody: but the time was never right. ya know, raising children, having to work etc.....then all the sudden, i was like, "this is it", i'm gonna do it. i have never looked back, as a matter of fact, i am going for rn....so, go for it!!! you will not regret it.

if it will make you feel any better,I'm54 and I just passed the 2nd Qtr and having a great time, I'm the oldest in my class, the students in my class range from the 20's to the 50's, and all of them are great, so if I were you, I wouldn't worry about the age thing

To reiterate whats been said (and dig the nonsense out of your head = ) ...

The only limits we have are the limits we place on ourselves. So if nursing is what you want to pursue, I think we would all agree in saying GO FOR IT! When I first attended nursing school, the age group was from 20-50, average age about 35. I took some time off and when I went back, the 40+ crowd grew. Most people go into nursing as a second or even third career path. But whatever you decide, Good luck.

No, you are definately not too old. I was 37 when I started classes. That

was nearly 14 years ago. Our class had a mixture of ages from 18 to 55.

My daughter is now enrolled in nursing school and finds the age range to

be the same. So you go girl and get out there and enroll! Consider taking

your prereqs first (non-clinical classes). Makes it easier when you get into

clinicals. I acutally think us older students may have an advantage with

life experience. It's amazing how much having children helps in OB and Peds

classes!! :) Best Wishes!
